I am a campy bastard.
And I don't care.

If the guy doesn't like you for who you are, change!

The music is good, but the story is so stiff that it could use some grease.

Grease is my favourite guilty pleasure. John Travolta can't really sing but the film is very enjoyable.

It's amazing how much we forgive musicals their flaws because we love them so. This is one I grew up watching and enjoy so much that I find it hard to actually "review." It's a wonderful piece of commerical 70's pulp and though today's generation would find it stupid, I think it was quite ingenious for its time.

Grease is often reported as being the most successful modern Hollywood musical. It was made at a time when the musical was considered a dead form of entertainment. Indeed, although the stage show of Grease, originating out of Chicago in 1971, had been a long running Broadway hit, the film version was passed on several times before producer Alan Carr got it going. Carr insisted that the original stage choreographer Patricia Birch was retained for the movie, and her work with first-time director Randal Kleiser (whose background was in television) went a long way to ensure the movie’s success. The original play was expanded for the movie version and new songs were added. Indeed, the film proved so popular that…

Grease is the word that's got groove and meaning in this classic movie, so hold up from flogging your log and let me tell you about it, stud. Set in the late '50s (and therefore coming prepackaged with rose-tinted nostalgia), high-school life is joyously depicted - if somewhat sugarcoated - as we are introduced to the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies. The T-Birds are rockin' and rollin' and whatnot their way through school, led by an effortlessly cool Danny Zuko (John Travolta), and with each supporting actor bringing a certain something to their character giving the group a great dynamic. Perfectly matched by the Pink Ladies, who this year intend to to rule the school, it's only when summer fling…

The lasting image of this film for me is Newton-John vamped out, having decided that Travolta's Danny will never love her for who she is. So she gives up her identity (and presumably, her purity) to mollify a guy who only seems to have given up his bad guy image (notice how he tosses that sweater in the final number). Of course, maybe he really is a good guy, but then the movie is just a mess, her transformation completely unnecessary. The songs were fun enough, but that's about it.

Admit it:, you love this film with all of its eccentricities but you haven’t got the guts to speak in public. Well, I do, in my opinion, Grease isn’t just a romantic comedy, it’s is a delicious and fun musical to the core, it’s also a postmodern parody film about young people in the 50s and 60s, it is a magnificent musical, full of humor, rhythm and great songs. This film really brings us back to the “good ole days”, cotton candy, milkshakes, hamburgers, high school dances and poses, leather jackets, blue jeans, greased hairstyles, comb in back-pocket, John Travolta’s swaying hip, Olivia Newton John’s innocence and so many more. All of these are topped with a special soundtrack (which…
