Don’t expect great things from this latest big screen adaptation of Great Expectations. Dickens’ classic novel has been adapted numerous times over the years with varying degrees of success but it is a story that has endured, no matter how many liberties are taken with the source material. This most recent and glossy interpretation from Mike Newell feels surplus to requirements, neither adding a new spin on an oft-told tale nor being definitively faithful. Instead it is a lifeless imagining that hits the familiar story beats but does so with bland efficiency.
Newell’s adaptation of Harry Potter was polished, visually handsome, well acted and rather soulless. Unfortunately, even when working with great literature he has replicated this formula yet this…

Some strong performances are let down by this dreary and meandering retelling of the Dickens classic. Give this a miss and check out David Lean's classic 1945 adaptation instead, you won't be sorry.

Hah! The great expectations I had of this movie were certainly not met! I must admit, there would have probably been more disappointment had I seen any of the previous adaptations of Great Expectations. So for once it's a good thing I haven't read the book or watched any of the earlier versions. My friend, who has read the book, was devastated.
Actually, I don't think I could complain about the actors' performances. They all did a pretty good job, my favourites being Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham-Carter (although I am slowly beginning to get tired of the 'sameness' of her recent roles). Every other aspect of the movie is quite average and I felt the story line wasn't put forward clearly enough. And I had to watch it in Spanish, which was even more painful!

Adapted from Dickens' novel by One Day scriptwriter David Nichols, this is appallingly mis-cast (especially the two leads, Pip an Estella) and features a performance as Miss Haversham (by Helena Bonham Carter) which is long on batty behaviour but short on emotional pain. Ralph Finnes is fine as the convict Magwitch, but director Mike Newell seems constrained by what looks like a tight budget.

A lathargic adaptation of the Dickens classic. This has a great English ensemble cast and decent production values. There's even some nice cinematography here too, but it's all so, well, bland.
It probably doesn't help that Pip is played by two pretty bland actors and that the only mild distractions are some alarmingly pantomimic performances (Sally Hawkins, David Walliams and Bonham Carter in particular). It just feels so uneven and frustratingly dull.
Recommended?: I'd say look to another adaptation before going to this (Cuaron's?) Or better yet, read the book.

A jolly-good Dickensian adaptation that will be moste enjoyable for all Dick-Heads. It was all rather splendid really. Huzzah!

Es nesaredzu pilnīgi nevienu iemeslu, kāpēc šis būtu jāskatās no A līdz Z... -
I like Scrooge but other than that I'm not really into Charles Dickens.
So as the British say... It's not my cup of tea!

Well made and is found with a great load of performances, but it felt longer than it was, and it never really concluded anything fully enough. Normally it had a TV series to spread it's depth of story, but it all feels a little rushed, and could have done with a little more of a duration.

This adaptation was well-acted but I felt that the 2 hour runtime wasn't enough to create a fully satisfying take on the story. It often felt like it was rushing compared to the BBC's 3-hour adaptation a couple of years ago. It captured most of the events faithfully, naturally with a few changes. Ralph Fiennes was only just recognisable as Magwich and Jeremy Irvine and his brother Toby were effective Pips. Helena Bonham Carter was mildly disappointing as Miss Haversham (strangely, as many would consider it a role she was born to play), it seemed to just copy elements of previous mad women she has played in Sweeney Todd whereas Gillian Anderson in the BBC drama was more mysterious and chilling. I haven't yet seen the David Lean film but I felt this was enjoyable, if rushed.
