While its flaws are now perhaps a bit more evident, Gremlins 2 is still a film I love, mainly because Dante has made a film that is a tribute to cinema and feels as some sort of muppet/live action cartoon hybrid.
Sure, the tone is completely different from the first one, but I don't mind. It's over the top, silly and, most importantly, great fun. The first time I saw it, I was about 15, I did not get all the movie references and watching it now at the tender age of 37, I am amazed by the sheer amount of in jokes and tributes there are in here. It makes for some very enjoyable viewing.
There's hardly any plot…

I really wanted to like this more than I did. This film had just enough fun moments that it won me over in the end. It is pretty "out" for a kids film so I give it props for that but it's a bit overlong.

Gremlins 2 is the Playtime to the original's Mon Oncle. And everyone knows Playtime's the better - and funnier - film.

Gizmo ca-ca.
-MohawkWith Gremlins being a hit, Warner Bros wanted Joe Dante to direct a sequel right away but he declined. The studio was moving ahead with the sequel without Dante until they offered him something that studios never offer anyone: total creative control. I kinda wish I didn't know that because Gremlins 2 is an inferior film to the original in every sense of the word and I don't want to believe that it's because Dante was not interfered with that it happened.
The director wanted to make a satire of the first film and sequels in general, this doesn't entirely work. The meta humor for instance was ahead of it's time including such gags as having Leonard…

Possibly one of the best sequels of all time because it is basically an anti-sequel. Joe Dante essentially sends up the original film, along with countless other clever nods to TV, film and pop culture. When I was a kid, I loved this movie because it was so weird and chaotic. As an adult, I appreciate the sheer ballsiness of making such an insane movie.

Growing up in the 1980's was a weird time. After the runaway success of Star Wars, literally every film became a cartoon and/or was marketed to children in the form of coloring books, action figures, fruit snacks, etc. So what if the film was rated PG-13 (or in some cases R)? Though I didn't end up seeing this film until I was probably fifteen, six-year-old Craig was very familiar with this film thanks to the book section at the local Pic 'N' Save. I particularly remember the spider-Gremlin. And boy was the marketing effective. Oh how I desperately wanted to see this film, but alas my parents didn't want to waste a Friday night with such "childish" fare.

I'm one of those guys that actually likes Gremlins 2 more than the first film. The thing that many people criticize about it - it has very little structure or plot - is exactly why I like it. I'm perfectly okay with everything devolving quickly into anarchy and cartoonish madness.
Maybe I just connect easily with Joe Dante's weird sense of humor and his attempts to bring Looney Tunes into live action. I think everything is executed perfectly. The special effects actually hold up very well, even though you have to accept they are somewhat stylized. Just the combination of the effects into the image is often very nice looking and an improvement over the previous film.

Joe Dante returns to direct the sequel to 'Gremlins' with a new breed of monster, as well as a new approach to the frnachise; this time full of in-jokes, gags and humour. It stars Zach Galligan as Billy and Phoebe Cates as Kate who once again are forced to battle the Gremlins trying to take over a corporate skyscraper and eventually move out on New York City. Co-starring John Glover, Robert Prosky and Robert Picardo.
It's a turn around from the dark, horror theme of the first film to be a much brighter, comical and light-hearted film in which Gizmo returns and is accidentally splashed with water, leading to the arrival of more wackier, crazier and character-based Gremlins who, thanks…

This is without a doubt my ultimate guilty pleasure film, whenever it is on the TV regardless of the time i will watch it to the end.
I am probably outspoken in my opinion that it is better than the original and i can see why, the original is great, it is an effective comedy while also being an effective horror, there are a few creepy parts to it.
Ultimately this film dispenses the horror aspect and decides to go in a more outlandish (because mogwais and gremlins aren't outlandish) and satirical direction and its setting is one location which is a media huge media building in New York, there is a lot more humor and straight up gags that…
