Film #30 of The December Project
This was my last unwatched Joe Wright film, and I can now comfortably say he's one of my favorite directors. The guy is a visionary! This film doesn't fit into any one box. It's a coming-of-age teen dramedy, a spy thriller, and a fairy tale. With so much going on, it probably shouldn't work as well as it does, but I couldn't look away for a single second.
It looks absolutely perfect for a start. I love the way it's shot, the set design, the costumes, Saoirse Ronan's hair… I mean seriously, I wanted to run my fingers through her hair so much. Eric Bana was just as yummy as he normally is. I…

This is one of those movies that washes over you and you can't quite figure out where it's going. Joe Wright is an undoubtedly talented director and this does seem like a bit of a departure after period pieces "Pride & Prejudice" and "Atonement".
Featuring an unbelievably crazy plot and heaps of violence, this story of a 15 year-old girl trained as an assassin in the wilderness of Northern Finland is nothing short of loopy. Eric Bana plays the girl's father, an ex-CIA operative who has turned her into something extraordinary.
As Bana and his daughter reappear in society a cat and mouse game ensues between them and the sinister agencies intent on capturing them. Saoirse Ronan plays the deadly Hanna and… -
I noticed on this rewatch that Hanna seems to have a lot of similarities to Nicholas Winding Refn's Drive. Both films are filled with dark and gritty noir-like themes, both have a fantastic electronic musical score, both are violent, and both take the viewer in a very different direction than expected. I am honestly surprised that this didn't receive more attention upon its release as it is a very well made film with a fantastic performance from Saoirse Ronan, especially considering her youth. I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoyed Drive. If you haven't seen either Hanna or Drive then I highly recommend that you check out both.

I can't be sure but I think this might be brilliant. The reason for the uncertainty is because it is very much a marmite film to the point that I think opinion may change considerably on repeat viewings. I totally understand why people won't like this and for that reason it is impossible to recommend as I would hate to get somebody's hopes up only for them to be disappointed by the end results.
It is also tricky to explain why I enjoyed it so much because I have a feeling that when I try and explain it in words I will begin to over analyse it and begin to lose the magic. It is one of the most schizophrenic…

"I just missed your heart."
Hanna is the most badass female character I've had the pleasure to witness ever since I saw Death Proof for the first time.

Hanna is not an easy film to categorize. It seems simple: A spy thriller, wherein a young girl is chased across continents by an obsessed CIA agent with something to hide.
And that's basically the plot. But it's so much more. Saoirse Ronan plays Hanna as deadly skilled in some things -- she can kill a deer with an arrow, and she can kill a person with her bare hands. But because she's been raised in a cabin in the woods, she has never experienced electricity or music or dancing or love. Ronan's confusion and astonishment as she experiences some of these things are equally beautiful. The girl's a real find. I am glad I have a copy of Atonement…

Well, well Mr Joe Wright, quite the surprise package you bestow upon us, an art-house action film that channels Jean-Pierre Jeunet on uppers infused with a Chemical Bro's blood virus. The fairy-tale symbolism is potent and the set-piece styling's are sexy. A film that knows how to snicker at itself, and most of the cast are in on it. Highly recommended!

The Devil is in the details/beats".

This was very entertaining, the camera work and cinematography are great. I liked the story, and the fact that even if you lay it out no much happens, yet it's highly entertaining more due to the character. I did however dislike how at the beginning she can kill a number of trained soldiers with ease and then later on when she is going against three bad guys, including one with little to no training, she is in trouble and runs away.

As cool and confident as it's titular protagonist, Hanna takes a simple premise, does little to add to it, contains no real surprises, yet still manages to be incredibly watchable and thoroughly entertaining.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, and it was kind of a shot in the dark to watch it in the first place. Some of the characters had some weird-ass vibes which made it more interesting (I'm looking at you, mushroom pedophile man). And yes she kills people which is pretty gnarly.

Absolutely fun from start to finish with a refreshing and wonderful protagonist. Visually a stunner.

I wanted to like this, but after the first act (which was excellent), it didn't do what I expected. In a bad way.
But I know a lot of people really enjoyed this film. It just became a little too quirky as it went along for me.
Worth a watch!
