Clive Barker is a unique and pretty disturbed storyteller. Whether it's him writing children's stories or full on horror epics, there is always one consistent element there and that is his fascination with pain, either mental or physical.
In his novel 'The Hellbound Heart' Barker created the anti-angel and named them Cenobites. The notion of these Angels of Hell are not that they bring relief for your eternal soul, but they are there to bring you anguish, teach you about pain and grind your soul to pulp. For eternity.
In this film there is no middle ground with the antagonists. They are pure evil, single minded in their goal and serve as a mirror to man's incessant need to explore…

"You solved the box, we came. Now you must come with us, taste our pleasures."
One of my favorite horror films. Crazy, yet still fun.

The relationship between sex and the horror genre is one that psychoanalysts and pretentious undergrads (guilty as charged!) have been exploring for decades. From the romantic gothic literature of the eighteenth century, to the Hitchcockian exploration of the Freudian subconscious and, most recently, the role of the virgin in contemporary slasher movies, it is a fact of life that sex and horror are intrinsically linked. Women in the genre are, with only a few exceptions, presented as promiscuous and lacking in morals whilst men are presented as aggressive, sexually-repressed beasts that fear the power of women. Before Hellraiser, however, there was never really a horror film that was this explicitly interested in sex, particularly the violent, sadomasochistic sex with…

This is my first rewatch of this classic horror movie in years and also a start of a marathon of the franchise.
Clive Baker must not have a successful career as a director, but he's definitelly one of the greatest minds when it comes about horror and Hellraiser must be his most expressive work so far. The very idea of the cenobites as bringers of pain and pleasure is disturbing and sick but yet very clever, almost ingenius, it talks a lot about a dark side of mankind. The visuals of the cenobites, coming out straight from Clive's twisted mind, are very unique and ugly, leaving them as some of the most remarkable creatures of all time, especially Pinhead, one…

When I started to get into horror movies I pretty much dove head first into all of the famous horror series out there and loved them all I loved Friday The 13th, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween, Child's Play I even loved the crappier series like Leprechaun and Full Moons Puppet Master which was actually one of the main reasons I got into horror in a big way even if the movies were crappy. There were two series which had up to that point eluded me though The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hellraiser. When I was a kid if it wasn't at the video rental store or on cable one night I had no luck. One night though I…

not bad, but not half as clever as it thinks it is - just like the book in fact. seems like an extended eighties music video at times... and why is there only one english character when it's meant to be set in london. everyone else is american for some inexplicable reason...

Hellraiser : I saw this one today with lots of curiosity. I was wondering what would make it such a better movie that it will spawn eight more films.
After watching the film my question still remains unanswered. I happened to see the uncut edition. With absolutely brutal depictions of mutilations it makes you shiver out of its freakishness and not terror.
I could not understand the what it had, to make it that interesting to the audience. There is no back-story to the characters. Not much reasons and explanations on Cenobites and their abilities as well.
From the forum here, Is it worth to have a look at any of the eight related movies?

I love this film so damn much.
It's so scary and arresting and disturbing and quotable and sexy and the effects are so perfect and the acting's so wonderful and it's so expertly paced.
It's truly baffling that Barker wasn't ever able to make a film this good again. I like his other two films, but they don't even come close to Hellraiser.

Whoa, hadn't seen this in a while!
It's not a very good film, is it? I think they managed to gather the worst actors available and put them in this film, at least those of which they could afford. The cheesy dialogue doesn't help either.
Stay with us. We can all be happy here.
The opening scene is quite creepy, when Frank acquires the cube and goes to check it out. The effects and the makeup throughout the film is absolutely great and makes it worth watching even today. But in terms of scares, tension or suspense it hasn't held up as well as some of the other franchise starters - it isn't the tiniest bit scary. But maybe that's not the point at all.

Plot - In Morocco a man, Frank Cotton, searching for new pleasures opens a portal using a puzzle box, to a hellish dimension populated by the mysterious cenobytes (Pinhead and co), where he is trapped and tortured. Sometime later his brother (Larry) moves into their old house with his wife (Julia) and daughter (Kirsty). During furniture moving blood is spilled in Frank's room, somehow bringing him back into the 'real' world but he is incomplete and needs blood.........lots of blood , to fully come back. He enlists the help of his brother's wife whom he has a complicated past with and it's up to the plucky daughter to stop them......
Thoughts - Really nicely constructed horror. Move past the era's…
