Her Majesty is a coming-of-age film about a young girl who realizes her lifelong dream when Queen Elizabeth II comes to visit her small hometown.
A lovely film with a good message about the sins of colonialism and the often forgotten tragedies of our past. It follows a young, New Zealand girl as her passion for the Queen (she writes letters to try and get the Queen to visit her town) is forced to reconcile with her encounter with a Maori woman who's history and legacy is marred by the treament of her people by the British establishment. These attrocities of course intersect with themes of land and culture, and as this young New Zealand girl learns about the Maori history, she comes to understand that the Queen's appearance means something much different for her than it does the Maori people.
It's about the power…
