"We know ya done that bank job!"
This is one of those films I've had forever on my to-do list, and seeing it pop up on Disney Star, I decided to give it a go. I remember being vaguely amused by the original trailer way back in 2001, but not being fussed enough to track it down. Was it worth the wait? The short answer - No! For those unfamiliar, the late Mel Smith directs (and cameos if you look hard enough) this gangster 'comedy' that stars Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack. The premise, such as it is, sees Driver and McCormack's best friends overhear dialogue between some villains during a heist, and together decide to blackmail them for some…
besties? conning men? with a sugarbabes sound track? dont mind if i digeree-dogeree-do
How do you decide what you're going to watch? Everybody on LB has a watchlist right? So you fill it up with movies that have caught your attention for one reason or another, add some others due to recommendations from friends or simple curiosity after reading an entertaining review. But what if you don't get a choice? Well if you're like me and your wife has a penchant for that knob Danny Dyer, you get this old shite.
High Heels and Low Lifes is fucking abysmal. Even with the not too shabby looking Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack in tow, this is an insult to the senses. Now I don't like to speak ill of the dead, but director Mel…
Is it dumb? Yes.
Is it silly? Yes.
Is implausible? Yes.
Did I throughly enjoy all the shenanigans? Yes!
Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack are so incredibly likable and electric on screen you can’t help but laugh and enjoy their adventures together. Plus nostalgia bonus for all the 2001 fashions!
This should be a one star film at best but it has Minnie Driver wielding a machine gun, a Sugarbabes needle drop, early noughties fashion, and a fun cast of British light and heavyweights so it's impossible for me to rate this any less than three stars. I'm sorry but themz the rules.
Film #5 // Minnie Driver Marathon
Actor Len Collin hospitalised with severe back issues after carrying this whole film
This definitely had potential, always teetering on deranged camp fun but on a whole was a little undercooked for my liking. Loved Minnie Driver!
Ok so the world wants me to think that this is a bad film, but it just isn't. The screenplay is by the same person who also wrote Spiceworld, so it's just the right amount of ridiculous. I started a phone note of all the good quotes and had to stop honestly 20 minutes in because everything was just too iconic but here are my favourites (yes all from the first 20 minutes!):
"It's my birthday!"
"I'm unemployed"
"I guess I just don't really understand what an Alien Tomato sounds like"
"How did you get this number?"
"I looked you up in the book, under D for Dickhead"
"The Aremenian, where the HELL do they come from?"
"Armenia, sir"
"You are drunk and an American, you are really gonna piss them off"
asdfhasjfha I can not so iconic
I'm sorry I just woke up, did I miss something, that's right your film...boring
