Dear mr. Roth,
In your feeble attempt at gritty realism in this foray into the torture-porn universe you overlooked a teeny, tiny thing. We do not speak, nor have we ever spoken, German in the Netherlands. Dutch (that is the name of our language) doesn't even sound like German.
Do some research, you stupid git.Yours sincerely,

More like 'Hostile!' Because they're not very nice to each other.... you know like name of the movie is Hostel but I... I did a thing with words... like... yeah.
This movie reduced my brain to complete mush.

This movie really honed in on so many cultural fears of the time. The movie speaks to a post- 9/11 fear of foreigners, a post- Abu Ghraib fear of torture, a universal fear of creepy eastern Europeans. To write this off as "torture porn" is about as lazy as criticism can get and strengthens the old grampa views of Roger Ebert that anything bloody is void of artistic merit.

Worth a watch?
FUCK YES!
Really, it works surprisingly well, even if it's a cynical piece of work. At any rate, it's much better than Roth's new (co) production, Aftershock. And better than Cabin Fever... but does that even need saying?
So yeah, give this one a go.

“You can pay to do anything. Anything.”
-The Dutch Businessman (Jan Vlasak)Hostel ABC, 123. Part 1 of the trilogy.
Hostel’s a funny one. For some, it’s going to be unnecessary degradation and exploitation, for others a welcome return to the gristly video nasties of the 1970’s. For me, it was more in the direction of the latter than former.
Certainly, it attempts to be more than your typical post-Saw ‘torture porn’. So I gave it a rewatch just now. Well I was half watching The Hotel Inspector at the same time too, but they go hand in hand anyway. Kind of (Yes they do). It has its shortcomings. It has successes too.The overarching premise is actually rather intriguing,…

This week Forest continues his Carnosaur retrospective as he shares his thoughts on Carnosaur 2. Cory goes in a different direction, kicking off the summer travel season with Hostel.
The guys also discuss Forest moving into his new apartment, conveniently located above a bar, and the Eerie Roller Girls kick the tampons out of the Little Steel Derby Girls. All that and Seth MacFarlane's Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey.

A great story, fantastic score, perfectly paced direction and gruesome as hell make-up effects make this Roth film a real treat for gore-hounds.

Terrible. I don't get torture porn. I honestly think people who enjoy torture porn literally get off on torture porn.

Unpleasant, but well made

Yes, of course! -
I was expecting this to be so much more violent then it was, that was disappointing in some ways. However, the plot and concept behind it were so much more interesting than I expected. This is actually a really thoughtful and interesting film. Great use of suspense.
