Golden age Canadian slasher from Prom Night director Paul Lynch features a group of idiots wrecking a yacht and getting stuck on a deserted island with a mauling killer. It’s a light on the blood affair but the mean spirited Humongous finds other ways to be skeevy... the opening rape scene is just brutal plus there’s implications of human/dog sex... so yeah... that’s a thing that happens here. Not a classic per say, but for me it’s better than the reputation it has… it’s a neat little slasher with a great poster, solid atmosphere, and a killer finale.
Kinda reminds me of another nutso trapped on an island movie that I also love… American Gothic, but slightly darker and mixed with some of that gruesome Antropophagus charm.
I love that this is Canadian. I also love how grim and atmospheric this gets. It may be lacking in chainsaws but this actually feels a tad darker than its primary influence, at times. Creepy, stranded-on-an-island, Scooby-Doo meets Leatherface kinda vibes, with a hulking freak who crushes heads in his bare hands. Furthermore, it opens with a scene that feels like the shortest rape-revenge movie ever. A woman is raped by a drunk man at a party, immediately followed by the man being savagely attacked by a dog and subsequently finished off by the woman he just raped. I half expected the credits to start rolling, but it's all just setup for the fun that comes later. Surely you've guessed…
This was a nice surprise. Can't beat some good ol' 80s slashers. It's very atmospheric & I liked the setting. The killer is cool, but needed more screen time imo. The whole thing is very similar to F13 part 2.
Cinematography is nice, there's some good techniques on display to help it stand out a bit more than other similar films from this time. Lighting is good, the darker scenes are effective and well shot.
Characters are hit & miss, some are generic for the genre. The main 2 woman are the best characters & actors. I'm not just saying that because they're wearing less than the others, they're genuinely interesting. The killer looks cool, but isn't seen enough. I liked how you…
With as much atmosphere as there is horny teens, Humongous is a fun movie to watch at 5 in the morning.
Shot with style, the movie thrives off moody, darkly-lit setpieces. Lots of creative camera movement also enhance the viewing experience. I loved all the moments with the titular “Humongous”. His hulking physique is always just out of site or shrouded by darkness, he gives off a menacing aura because of it.
The cast are all decent and I liked the group of characters they played. From the sultry Donna to the psychotic Nick. They’re all fun to watch. (I might have a crush on Donna... help)
Severely underrated that’s for sure. It’s got all the ingredients for a cult classic, so why’s everyone sleeping on this? Make this the 80’s slasher icon it was meant to be.
I had wanted to see this film for awhile and it definitely delivered! It grabbed my interest from that ultra bleak opening scene and kept me interested throughout.
A group of people end up on a remote island after their boat randomly explodes. So far so good right? As they are stranded on the island they are stalked by a deadly and deformed person hell bent on murdering every last one of them! The backstory of the killer is a twisted tale tracing back to the gruesome opening sequence.
Although the film has its cheesy moments it maintains the bleak and mean spirited vibes introduced in that gnarly opening scene. As the characters are mauled and murdered the deranged killer…

Humongous is a little talked about slasher flick from the golden age of slashers. It does a few things that that make it different from the other slasher films of the time. For starters, that montage at the title screen is brilliant, its a photo collage set to a soft jazz beat that shows the passage of time and a change of mood for the worse. Second, the film is better made than a lot of the films that came out at the same time, the composition is great and so is the editing.
Lastly, Humongous relies more on atmosphere, mystery and tension than just a kill every ten minuets, and gore. (Not that there is any thing wrong…
A woman is raped and 36 years later a boatload of young people capsize on her island which is now patrolled by her “humongous” offspring. They are killed in order of their acting ability, worst to least-worst. I don’t think the movie does that intentionally, just an observation! So many dumb and exploitive things happen that it’s obvious Humongous was simply made to get teenagers into the theater. It isn’t terrible but it isn’t good either, and practically every “slasher” trope is checked off by the time the movie ends.
Monstrous mash-up with slash-up from Prom Night director Paul Lynch.
Opening with a particularly nasty but effectively dramatic rape scene, this, with the odd title sequence has you thinking it's slanting towards a wannabe serious melodrama.
Jumping thirty years ahead it thankfully settles in to familiar territory as five entitled teens end up stranded on this violated woman's own personal Isle of dogs where she now lives as a recluse with lots of these canine beasts. Of course its no secret looking at the poster to know that this isn't the only beast lurking within the surrounding woodland.
A good isolated setting to pick characters off in, as they split up and explore, trying to figure out what the audience…
This is basically just a worse version of Friday the 13th Part 2, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
A deformed maniac murders a stranded group of teenagers or young adults after they have to abandon their boat and come ashore on the island he lives on. It may sound like standard fare but the dark backstory of a rape that took place on the island and the buildup of the characters on the boat is the kind of homework that builds the foundation if that's even a consideration. Directed by Paul Lynch who did Prom Night, and he laid the groundwork there, too and it worked. You never really get a clear look at the killer because most of the film is shot in the dark and you can't help but think it would have been more intense with him standing in a shadow with a little light on him as someone's inadvertently backing into him while he waits like Michael Myers. But Humongous is a 1982 vintage slasher that you just have to take as is.
For the most part 'Humongous' is a surprisingly well-made early 80s slasher from the director of ‘Prom Night’ that reminded me of a less disappointing version of ‘The Slayer’. With its similar island setting and a lot of scenes that take place in the dark (this must've absolutely sucked on VHS because 70% of the movie was probably just black noise).
The film opens with a pretty intense flashback scene showing a rape that I did not expect and that set a darker tone.
There is a lot of sleazy lingering on the female cast in small outfits in the first half, which is always a welcome thing in early 80s slashers (for all the complaints about male gaze, the…

Friday the 13th Part 2 but make it on an island. Another mean-spirited big, deformed hulk dude goes on a rampage killing young adults flick, but this time with shipwrecked victims-to-be on a small, isolated island. There’s not a lot of blood or gore, or even interesting kills, but there is a pretty intense rape scene in the first five minutes and cute killer dogs. It drags a bit from there but it’s mostly pretty good for what it is.
