I Am Sam
2001 Directed by Jessie Nelson
Synopsis
love is all you need
Sam has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. He has a daughter with a homeless woman who abandons them when they leave the hospital, leaving Sam to raise Lucy on his own. But as Lucy grows up, Sam's limitations start to become a problem and the authorities take her away. Sam shames high-priced lawyer Rita into taking his case pro bono and in turn teaches her the value of love and family.

He went full retard ...

Overly shmultzy, the epitome of Oscar fodder, and worse camera work than The Blair Witch Project, the film gave me several cavities it was so overly sweet.
Penn's performance is a showstopper (remarkable how such a despicable person can create such warm loveable characters), but it is little Dakota Fanning that really steals the show.

Dear Sean Penn,
people say that you should have never gone full retard in this film, and I completely agree with them, but you should have never participated in this film in the first place. It's as terrible as your acting in this film. You and everyone involved (I'm looking at you Laura Dern especially) are better than this. Show it.
Sincerely, Me

This film forever changed my reactions to emotive cinema. I'm sure you don't want to hear someone harp on about what makes them cry, but this really started it. Penn is a chameleon of character, every gesture is so well timed and sincere that he secedes what many actors can never detach from; their notoriety. He is enveloped whole heartedly in his commitment to the role, pulling at your empathetic heartstrings. Fanning is truly gifted as a child actress, none more so than here, displaying no awkwardness or fault but accurately conveying the frustrations and folly of a child lacking family. Pfeiffer brings together an encompassing of great supporting actors scattered throughout the film as the detached, ungracious adult who in manipulating her image must learn to love. The mood is a rollercoaster, the music is pure and the motto tells a greatly satisfying story.

Amazing movie! Even though Sean Penn is kind of a weirdo in real life he is still one of the best actors in hollywood. This movie will make you cry like crazy, or at least thats what it did to me. Not sure if this was Dakota Fanning's first movie but MAN was she great

I love Sean Penn, but I really hated this movie. The soundtrack was awful, the cinematography "epiletic", and the plot wasn't moving at all.

A truly heart-warming story with an all round brilliant cast, but maybe just a little too long.

This is ranked the 8th best film by a site called Cuevana. Bullshit.
Extremely overrated, offensive, cliché-ridden, annoying, highly irrealistic, and it looks like a 5 years old directed it. I liked Forrest Gump because Forrest was such a likeable character, but I couldnt help loathing Sam. Unfortunately for me, I didnt make "a wonderful choice" picking this to watch.
Like my rating reads, there are only two stars on the movie: Sean Penn and Dakota Fanning, whose performances are pretty lowered by the content of the film.

8.5/10
The performances found in I Am Sam are so marvelous that they almost completely overshadowed the movie's flaws; Sean Penn, Dakota Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer were at the top of their game here. I couldn't help noticing though that it was a bit formulaic and that it may have fell a bit short in its aspirations, but despite everything I liked it very much because its honesty made it a truly poignant experience for me.

Great performances but there's something not quite right about the story.

La actuación de Sean Penn es excelente, la historia plantea un inmenso drama e inocencia que me cautivó, me hubiera gustado un final mas concreto, ya que da a interpretar varias cosas.

this is a great movie, starting with Sean Penn that creates a very well built, with touches of comedy of anger and soul, is also Michelle Pfeiffer that acts quite well, this movie is impossible not to like unless 're a heartless idiot or you're an idiot who does not like Beatlesy if you give 5 stars to this movie let me tell you that that's a wonderful choice
