Synopsis
The Conman who wouldn't go straight.

Steve Russell (Carrey) is a small-town cop. Bored with his bland lifestyle, Russell turns to fraud as a means of shaking things up. Before long, Russell's criminal antics have landed him behind bars, where he encounters the charismatic Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). Smitten, Russell devotes his entire life to being with Morris regardless of the consequences.

It's an unfortunate fact, but most comedies suck. Even the stuff that's considered funny(superbad, borat, etc) aren't really "good" movies. But luckily there have been some truly good ones in the last few years, mosly darker comedies(Four Lions, World's Greatest Dad), and this is one of them.
I can't remember the trailers for this but I'm sure they did a poor job of showing what the movie was like(not an easy task with a movie like this). It's told through Jim Carrey's character, probably not coincidentally because this is somehow a true(and crazy) story.
Carrey and McGregor meet in prison and fall in love; anything other summary isn't necessary. The first half is very funny. Holding back another half star…

I enjoyed this film very much. The outlandish storyline made me look up the validity of plot points and the movie is surprising accurate. Jim Carrey shines as Steven Russell; in fact, I think this may be the best performance of his career. McGregor who plays Phillip Morris, also does a great job portraying a submissive, gentle natured love struck individual. Both characters are so likeable, the audience finds themselves routing for them to be together (outside of jail, of course). It’s “Brokeback Mountain” meets “Catch Me if You Can” with an undercurrent of "Bad Santa" like humor and I loved every minute of it.

"...or you can suck my dick."
This is one of the best films about being gay ever made. It's hilarious, (kinda) steamy, and incredibly hilarious. As a gay man, I approve.

Apparently this is based on a true story, though I have no idea how close it is to real life, but regardless I kind of loved this movie. Jim Carrey was perfect as the con man and Ewan McGregor was great as his love interest. I laughed quite a bit, cringed in several parts when Carrey got himself into sticky situations, and was touched by some of the relationship bits. I did find a bit of the narration a bit odd and was not entirely happy with some of the information withheld until later, but overall it was pretty awesome and a fun watch.

A very funny, well written, and well acted film where Jim Carrey gives a fantastic performance that should have been praised a lot more when this came out.

Hi-larious. Jim Carrey is hi-larious. And not in an Ace Ventura/The Mask/Liar Liar kind of way. His performance in this rivals those in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show - and that's saying something. This ain't a slapstick rom-com kids...no film has conveyed true love quite as convincingly and humourously in a very long time. Oh...and it's based on a true story!

It all really happened... the story is pretty insane, and I think the right tone was picked t make it work, it's tongue and cheek but it's still real events, and I think knowing it really happened before hand helps the movie because it would've been hard to keep suspension of disbelief without knowing that. Carrey is a bit too Carrey at points, but overall he manages to hold everything together.

One of the best romantic comedies I have ever seen. Extremely funny and perfect performances from Carrey and McGregor.

Tagline: The conman who would not go straight.
Superb acting by both Jim Carrey & Ewan Mc Gregor. Carrey is the conman who would not go straight. Imaginable, even believable, more so because the story actually happened. The story is about Cregor coming out of the closet, and enjoying it like crazy. He's got quit a lifestyle. And what nobody tells you: Being gay is really expensive. So he becomes very creative making money... which is not appreciated by the people he workes/worked for. So he goes to prison. Meets the love of his life. Wants to take care of him. More lying, more conning more high-life style. The love looks genuine... more movies show a woman's admiration-gaze, this time it's…

Sweet, funny, and at times downright shocking. Both leads are pitch perfect in this odd true-life tale of just how many lies love can withstand...and how much one will lie to stand for love.

The best thing about I Love You Phillip Morris has to be that the film was based on a true story. Just read the Wikipedia page for Jim Carrey's character; it's incredible. But speaking of Jim Carrey, I found him to be a bit annoying during the film. He's funny at times, but his accent and mannerisms started to wear on me by the end of I Love You Phillip Morris. The fact that the story behind the film is true makes Phillip Morris a curious watch. Beyond that, everything else is unfortunately very middle-of-the-road.

Based on a true story of a former cop turned con artist who lands in prison and falls in love with his cellmate. When released from prison he decides to provide himself and his lover with an extravagant lifestyle. In order to fund this lifestyle he becomes a white collar criminal. Hilarious black comedy with a risky performance from Jim Carrey.

Not only does the film revolve around a crazy and fun real life story but it also brings to life some amazing performances from Jim Carrey and (even more so) Ewan Mcgregor.

One of those stories that you won't believe "really happened". I'd have preferred a more toned down performance from Carrey which he is capable of delivering.
