2001 ‘Siworae’ Directed by Hyun-seung Lee
Synopsis
Eun-joo moves out of her house "Il Mare", leaving behind a Christmas card for the eventual new owner of the house in 1999. In it she asks him/her to forward any mail of hers to her new address in the city. It is 1997 and Sung-hyun, the first owner of "Il Mare" is moving in and finds in his mailbox the Christmas card from Eun-joo. Thinking it was a joke, Sung-hyun leaves her a letter telling her so and reminds her that its 1997 not 1999. Eventually the two realize that they are separated by two years of time but can somehow communicate through the mailbox and begin to form a friendship through their letters.

What a lovely, original story. I love this film.
Two people who have lived in the same beautiful Lake House at different times discover something pretty fantastic about their mailbox. The discovery leads to a captivating relationship between them.
The film is not light at all. It is all muted greys, it is always raining or snowing or overcast, and both characters are quite morose, each in pain over losing something. Their only flicker of light is when they receive mail. But the story is so magical and well done and ultimately hopeful, that the dreariness of the look actually enhances that glimmer of hope. It makes you root for them even more.

When I saw The Lake House, I found out it was apparently based on this Korean film. I have to admit that I didn't understand completely the movie though some parts were clear enough to wrap my head around. Now, after watching this I kind of felt the same thing, because it's been 6 years since I saw The Lake House. I had to re-track my understanding of the film. Is it because I'm just normally slow to absorb things? Or maybe it is just a fairy tale without realism? Either way I still found this movie to be utterly beautiful: from the actors, the script, the soundtrack. After all is said and done, I can only conclude one thing: LOVE IS LOVE.

So much better than the Keanu/Sandra remake. The ending stretches belief, but as a whole is more believeable than The Lake House.

A romance mixing up time... The movie that Americans remade into The Lake House
In my continuing Gianna Jun zone, long overdue after the My Sassy Girl-crush, Il Mare is pretty much in the same terrain as Daisy.
Gianna is all cute, the architect stuff works, and the time-stuff is very weakly handled (even if it's handled a lot better than the Americans did it with The Lake House...). An overall quite forgettable experience, but with some nice scenes, ideas and cinematography.
Il Mare was watched to check it off my TOTAGA-list.

A touching, romantic drama with a touch of time travel, Il Mare is definitely a must-try for any fan of the romance genre.
