2010 Directed by Spike Jonze
Synopsis
A library assistant plods through an ordinary life in LA until a chance meeting opens his eyes to a the power of creativity and ultimately, love. When this new life and love begin to fall apart, he discovers he has a lot to give. This short film proves that ordinary is no place to be.

Spike Jonze’s I’m Here is a twee yet touching short film about the relationship between two robots. Set in a contemporary Los Angeles where robots and humans happily co-exist, the two electronic protagonists meet at a bus stop before embarking on a sweet yet intense relationship. At first the introduction of robotic characters seems like a pointlessly quirky addition yet as the story unfolds the design of the characters becomes more apparent.
I’m Here is a film about relationships, those intense and heady moments of feeling connected to another person yet it also explores the bittersweet times too. When his love begins to fall apart he discovers how much he will give up for her, quite literally. It is in…

December Project film 97
Shy geeky fixit guy meets rebellious, troubled manic pixie dream girl, both with mysteriously transatlantic accents. Only it's extra extra fucking quirky because they're both sentient robots. There is very little wider exploration of their world where robots and humans co-exist and in which the robots appear subject to Jim Crow type restrictions. There are two interesting stories hiding in here (the couple's - about personal identity and codependence in relationships - and the society's) but they are so sugar coated in kookiness that I was almost constantly annoyed.
It looks very Spike Jonze, with big geometric spaces and night lighting. He even re-uses Star Guitar (though not the video he made for it).

Francesca: What do you dream about?
Sheldon: What do you mean? We can't dream.
Francesca: Course you can, you just make it up. I had the scariest dream last night. I was trying to get away, and these plants they're attacking me, they were chasing me. It was so scary. And the vines were grabbing at me and they were trying to kill me and they were pulling me down on to the ground, they were trying to tear me apart. And right before I died, I just -- I woke up.
Sheldon: Woah, you're a good dreamer.Spize Jonze's I'm Here is a love story set in a world where robots and…

I'm Here is directed by the unique Spike Jonze, who has previously worked on Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and 2009's Where The Wild Things Are. The story revolves around two robots who live in sunny Los Angeles, where robots and humans co-exist. Sheldon (Andrew Garfield) is very shy, but when he starts to fall in love with the wild and gregarious Francesca, starts to live life to the fullest.
I really enjoyed the film, mainly because of it's simplicity and the character design. The peculiar way that the robots move and interact with each other is very intriguing. We have seen robots and humans live together before, but I'm Here doesn't go into the socio-political side of things, which I…

A librarian falls in love; he's a robot, she's a robot. His love means that he gives up a lot as she falls to pieces. I liked the acting and the voices but am not sure what the message was supposed to be, it may even be deeply misogynistic or perhaps I'm reading too much into it. Not at all sure.

A touching, cute, if not slightly predictable short.

Where The Wild Things Are didn’t really hit home too well with me, whilst still a surreal wonder world that Spike Jonze liked to roam around in, it seemed to meander from start to finish. However, I’m Here has got me pepped up for the next feature length he hopefully has in the pipeline.
This runs in at 31 minutes and has been on the short film festival circle since early 2010 and only seems to be officially available in under the title There Are Many Of Us – it’s supposed to be very well presented and I guess Jonze was looking for companion pieces to further contextualise the film.
We find Sheldon (Andrew Garfield) a retro looking robot on…

An enjoyable short film about two robotic humanoids in a human dominated world who become enamoured with eachother and enter into a relationship where one finds out just how much he is willing to give for love. There are lots and lots of faults, to be sure. But all in all, I don't regret watching it. Also, robots.

A memorable little production in which Jonze takes twee sentiments and molds them into something unexpectedly resonant.

A beautiful but heartbreaking deconstruction of young and naive unconditional love.
