Todd Haynes' Bob Dylan biopic evokes the musician's different sides, but it is much more complex than that, using the idea of a man who repeatedly reinvented himself as the starting point for an investigation of the fluidity of identity. It's heady and intellectual and obviously not for everyone, but it'll be a joy for anyone who has previously enjoyed Haynes' playful pastiches. Despite being two hours long, it never feels anything less than electric in its editing.

    CATE FUCKING BLANCHETT MAAAN.
Real intelligent movie about both the story, the music and the person that is Bob Dylan. The use of different actors is smart and visually pleasant as heeeeell.
Now go listen to the man, shut up and be happy.

I ended up really liking I'm Not There but I don't know why. I was literally nodding off at the start, often struggled to understand what was going or even follow the chronology. There were several points when I'd happily have had the film end but it just kept getting better and better. My knowledge of Dylan is probably limited to Don't Look Back and so I enjoyed Blanchett's sections the most. Had I known more about Dylan then I suspect that I'd get even more out of the film.

Todd Haynes's dreamlike, avant-garde film about Bob Dylan is about as far from the traditional bio-flick as one could possibly imagine, blessedly so.

It's remarkably hard to describe, but I'll give it a try: I'M NOT THERE attempts to encapsulate the entirety of American culture in the last century through the prism of six of Bob Dylan's various personas that he has presented over the years, each persona being played by a different actor, including a woman (a mesmerizing Cate…

It's too silly (especially in Woody's scenes) to be a serious biographical drama.

The acting, writing, and music is fine and dandy, but the way Bob Dylan's life is shown doesn't work too well. Bob's actors were fine, but his personalities being used as different people didn't really make for a good biographical film. Most of what was shown, like the fake documentary scenes along with Woody's and a lot of other scenes were uninteresting or not very entertaining.

It's a new directorial way for a biographical film, but it wasn't pulled off very well.

    The Reservoir Dog…

Without ever mentioning the name Bob Dylan, director Todd Haynes’ brilliant, dreamlike “I’m Not There” morphs in and out of many phases, psyches, mystique and masks of an icon forever fused into a cultural canon ball, flying and popping louder than most any before or after.

The film employs different actors (Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, Christian Bale, Ben Whishaw and Marcus Carl Franklin) to portray the legend’s takes on life, love, music, words, spirit, faith,…

I am not a fan of Bob Dylan, actually I don't even know his music or his personal life at all. I suspect if I started to listen to his music I'd like it. But this film is definitely not for me.

This is a totally unconventional film about a musician. Todd Haynes wrote 5 segments each starring a character inspired by a different incarnation of Dylan, a different era or phase of his life.

    There isn't really a plot…
