A slow tracking shot to a formal party of soldiers takes us right into the 1960s when the band hits a new note and a young blonde launches herself to the foreground of the frame with her new dance moves while everyone looks on in horror. Or: Mad Men done in about three minutes. Then it's off to Pearl Harbor, the Japanese planes almost never seen, only the bombs on the ground. The fluidity that Preminger captures the attack has a rare excitement/fear I've rarely seen before—his tracking shots with multiple explosions going off are confident, and remind me of some of the van scenes in Spielberg's War of the Worlds (and Jaws is reminiscent in other ways of this…
58 year old John Wayne poured into an Admirals uniform, pre-Archie Bunker Carol O’Connor, four-and-a-half foot tall Burgess Meredith, Slim Pickens in an undershirt, whippersnapper George Kennedy and Larry Hagman. As Classic Dank texted me when I was sending him screenshots of this killer cast, “women got pregnant just watching that movie”. You also get Kirk Douglas crushing the alcoholic second banana role and Peter Fonda fucking destroying a cameo as the well heeled Commander in Chief of the Pacific. In Harm’s Way is a real, movies-for-guys-who-like-their-movies-filled-to-the-brim-with-guys-only-guys-care-about-being-in-movies situation.

Even though I'm a huge fan of John Wayne, I never got to seeing this movie. The reason I finally did was not so much because of The Duke, but rather due to Otto Preminger directing it. Unfortunately, Preminger isn't as well known as some of his peers, but really someone who left his mark on Hollywood's Golden Age with classics such as Laura (1944) and Anatomy of a Murder (1959). He is therefore a director I always associated with smaller movies, and not the large war epics that In Harm's Way definitely is. This film was not what I imagined it to be? Having seen only two of Otto Preminger's films, one that was fabulous (Laura), and one that was a bit of a misfire (River of No Return), I wondered what I'd get here? In Harm's Way is another film that has sat on my Dvd shelf for years unwatched, for one reason or another? The running time, my aversion to war films with a Naval angle, and even John Wayne not playing a cowboy had made me apprehensive that this might not be for me. Um die Überschrift zu erklären: Der Film ist weder ein älterer "Dunkirk", noch "Darkest Hour", jedoch gab es für mich einige Parallelen. Der Film bearbeitet zwar ein anderes Ereigniss als die beiden genannten Filme, ist aber teilweise wie eine Fusion der beiden, weil "Dunkirk" den Krieg selbst aufzeigt, wohingegeng "Darkest Hour" die politische Komponente, bzw. die Planung naherbringt. "Erster Sieg" vereint beides. Und das nicht zu kurz mit einer Laufzeit von zwei Stunden und 40 Minuten. Allerdings zog der Film sich meines Erachtens nach nicht und füllt die Zeit sehr gut. Auch wenn die Spannung nicht konstant oben gehalten wird, tuen die kleinen Pausen, welche sich eher um fast alltägliche Probleme handeln…

Amazing that I'd never seen this before. Kind of reminds me of From Here to Eternity in some ways.
