Involuntary
2008 ‘De ofrivilliga’ Directed by Ruben Östlund
Synopsis
It's almost summer in Sweden and minor indiscretions and misbehavior abound. Leffe likes to show off for his friends and play salacious pranks, especially when he's drinking. Meanwhile, a righteous grade-school teacher doesn't know where to draw the line: she insists her fellow educators need a bit of instruction. Then there are two young teenage girls who like to pose for sexy photos and to party, but one night in a park, one of them is found passed out drunk by a complete stranger.

An incredibly realistic and relatable portayal of just.... people. It's filmed like you are watching the scene from a distance, like an observer and the camera never moves unless it absolutely has to. It made awkward situations (and there are a lot of them) feel tense, and melodramatic moments feel sincere.
-
Debut feature from Ruben Ostlund, this Swedish drama examines the nature of group behaviour and embarrassment via a series of unconnected vignettes that play concurrently through the film. Best of these is the tale of the actress on a coach trip with a stubborn driver, and the tale of two teenage girls on a night out with their mates. Curiously shot - all wide angles with a fixed camera - you never quite know where the film is headed but it always keeps you interested.

De ofrivilliga
"Several stories carry on alongside each other (but don't come together) and are beautifully and very naturally acted by a cast of actors who have appeared in very few other films. The stories seem to dwell on the idea of people making choices, taking responsibility for their actions and the effects of peer pressure, but the film felt as incomplete as many of its shots. We often could only see one of the persons involved in a conversation, or only part of them and in the same way the film felt as if there was nothing holding it together." -
Funny, awkward and thought-provoking. An astute debut from Ruben Östlund.

A Great Film. Funny, sweet, dark and weird.
People are so stupid sometimes.

I think this is a very good movie and I could see how it can be used discussing the consequences of peer pressure in school. Also I think it's an amusing attack on Swedish people's conformity and predisposition towards reserve and respect for authority, at least when sober.
