It is said that modern war is long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of extreme terror. If this is an accurate description, then Jarhead has nailed war, and in a very compelling manner.
Jarhead follows US Marine Anthony Swofford through his training and then deployment in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Shield and as the film progresses we see his sanity slowly drain until he becomes an angry, emotionally unstable, bloodthirsty mess. But not from the sight of fallen comrades or the growing fear of death but rather the torture of inaction.Swofford and friends are slowly driven insane as the thrill and allure of getting a kill, or even seeing their enemy, continues to evade…

"Welcome to The Suck"
This didn't suck as much as that tagline may lead you to believe.Jarhead is a film that has and will split opinions. Many people say that this is dull in parts, but I never got that feeling. I was interested from beginning to end seeing just how these soldiers were affected by the war around them, or lack therof. Even when they're not getting any action, this is a war film that's less about war and more about how war affects those in the midst of it. Knowing what they have to live off of and what they're missing on the outside is driving them crazy and it's just so captivating to watch their transformation…

Jake Gyllenhaal is the bored marine "jarhead" in Kuwait during the first gulf war. An object lesson in futility this is the autobiographical tale of Anthony Swofford ,a marine sniper taking part in operation desert shield and wanking himself blind in the process. A surreal and funny film about the modern soldiers lust for glory in combat and the political powers-that-be's inability to act. Tired of convention and inactivity Gyllenhaal and his buddies are driven crazy by the repetitiveness of doing nothing awaiting a battle that will never come. Months of isolation in remote desert outposts take a toll on the young Swofford as he is dumped by his girlfriend back home and cracks under the pressure of loneliness by…

A modern war classic, attempting to define the purpose of 'the warrior' in contemporary warfare.
There are some great performances here, and some really captivating moments, but perhaps a little subtly could have been used, rather than having all the characters cranked to 11 at all times.
The visuals and cinematography are great. You really get to feel the searing heat of the Kuwait desert. The script is serviceable, however could have done without the melodramatic monologues.
Overall, a great view, better than I originally remember and a must-watch for all war fans.

Based on Ex USMC Scout Sniper, Anthony Swofford's memoir Jarhead; this is an incredible look at how soldiering can change one man. The film follows Swofford from Boot Camp to active duty during the Gulf War. The film takes a close look at Anthony Swofford who has a family history that every male member has served in the war. Swofford attends extensive Marine training to become a scout sniper. The film shows the camaraderie of the soldiers going off to war. Also the film shows the inhuman side of the soldiers (Swofford pulls an M16A2 assault riffle on a fellow soldier, another soldier desecrates a dead Iraqi's body) Jarhead is set during the first Gulf War. Instead of fighting the…

Very interesting proposition by Sam Mendes. Aware of the war film genre's propensity to glamorize what it usually intends to denounce (with an explicit reference to 'Apocalypse Now'), this film is instead a dreary, absurdist portrait of life on the trenches. Not a masterpiece by any means, but still a pointed and critical narrative exercise.

A good take on how a tense war situation affects the soldiers. Jake Gyllenhaal is excellent!
