Reviews of Juliet of the Spirits 1965

Some stunning, thought provoking visuals, but all in all I was left disappointed. Felt like I was watching a collection of random scenes rather than a coherent film. And I know that Giuliette Masina was married to Fellini, but as I said in my La Strada review, I don't think she's a very good actress.

Gorgeous and well acted, but overlong.

This film had a slow start and then an acid trip of letting getting go of her husband and his cheating ways.

There is something about Giulietta Masina that I find quite captivating. Her face always says so much more than words can express on their own. I really liked this because I like her. Beyond that, the look of the film, the colours, the dreamy, sexy quality of this world, took me away from my own mundane world for a bit, and I was grateful for the respite.

So, we arrive at Juliet of the Spirits, the final film from Fellini's most celebrated period, which I've nominally stretched from Nights of Cabiria to Amacord (and I admit I've wended my way nonchalantly through them with little regard to chronology). I get the fuss. I've enjoyed the majority of the films, certainly more than I haven't. Those I've enjoyed most have been either self-referential in the extreme or starred Giulietta Masina. Juliet of the Spirits benefits from the latter…

a lesser known Fellini that is worth the delightfully bizarre visit into an imaginary space, the likes of which are seldom seen these days.

There's something daring about casting your wife with her own name in a film about a woman coming to terms with a philandering husband. It must have been interesting on set. This film feels almost like a female inversion of 8 1/2. The elements which make up a person and cause their beautiful confusion. For a film made by a man about a woman it seems rather honest and true. But then again I am a man.

This is Fellini's first film in color, and he took full advantage of it. This film moves in and out of reality and a fantasy world. This is a sad movie and it made me uneasy several times. I still love Gulietta Masina. She is my all time favorite actress.
