Kids
1995 Directed by Larry Clark
Synopsis
A controversial portrayal of teens in New York City which exposes a deeply disturbing world of sex and substance abuse. The film focuses on a sexually reckless, freckle-faced boy named Telly, whose goal is to have sex with as many different girls as he can. When Jenny, a girl who has had sex only once, tests positive for HIV, she knows she contracted the disease from Telly. When Jenny discovers that Telly's idea of "safe sex" is to only have sex with virgins, and is continuing to pass the disease onto other unsuspecting girls, Jenny makes it her business to try to stop him.

The tragedy of youth. My introduction to the work of Harmony Korine in preparation of 'Spring Breakers', his Screenplay is able to transfer teenage slang in subtle profundity. A much better and more meaningful experience than I was expecting. Very brutal though.
Also, I have spent the better part of two weeks trying to suppress that horrifying rape scene from 'Irreversible', then I have to go and watch this. Fuck!

Rough, ugly and more than a little bit perverted, Kids nonetheless is fascinating from the word go. It's a fascinatingly nihilistic portrait of early 90s youth, with all the authenticity of a Richard Linklater or Kevin Smith film but with none of the optimism. I understand that this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I was sucked in throughout.

A person without any legs uses a skateboard to glide through subway cars begging for change while chanting "I have no legs!" over and over. One of our "heroes" gives the man some pocket change. The generous kid, who just a minute ago was making light about a sincere ambition to manipulate and fuck as many underage virgins as possible, puts on solemn look for a minute. Any person who would give the beggar the smallest amount of money presumably has some sort of moral compass.
This is certainly the most puzzling and most memorable moment of the film in my opinion. Is Korine trying to imply that these kids would do despicable things no matter how strong their ambition…

I like to think this is a sequel to The Little Rascals.

Jesus Christ, what happened?
If this is accurate than I'm glad my time in the 90s was spent as a little kid. Teens make stupid choices, when sexual activity was on the rise and education wasn't doing enough kids essentially killed themselves through their own stupidity. This is a heavy film, and whilst this is not as necessary now as it was in the 90s, knowing it got heard pleases me. I hope it changed some lives.

" When you're young, not much matters. When you find something that you care about, then that's all you got. When you go to sleep at night you dream of pussy. When you wake up it's the same thing. It's there in your face. You can't escape it. Sometimes when you're young the only place to go is inside. That's just it - fucking is what I love. Take that away from me and I really got nothing."
I struggled on what I was going to rate this film. It technically is not an incredible film, but everything it tries to do it nails(Pun slightly intended).
Larry Clark's raw directorial debut does not let up. A story of New York… -
KIDS. What some may right off as a juvenile raunch-fest, is actually a shocking and provocative look at just what children are really doing. What a lot of people just don't realize is, to the kids who weren't privileged (like me and my friends), this isn't a fictional film, but a near documentary-esque film about 4 kids. This is exactly how we grew up, well, maybe without the HIV, but the drugs, the parties, the shop lifting, the walking around town in the hot sun for miles just because or to get to your friend's house. It's true. It's an honest to goodness, on point film.
Great soundtrack too. Watch this film. -
Good for shock value, and is actually pretty damn realistic.

I have mixed feeling for films that replace plot with a message. Sometimes it works, in the case of "Kids" I'm not sure it does. I was bored and uncomfortable right up until the last ten seconds when I finally felt the power of what the director was trying to say. But was that ten seconds worth the full hour and a half? I really don't know.
