One of Elvis' earliest and best movies. Before Elvis was Typecasted into the same kind of role (and with less effect in later movies) he made a real go at the acting and did a great job here. Although he sings and gets the girls (which became the norm) the movie has a good main plot and a good cast.
His last movie in black & white and last before his army stint, he plays a young rebellious man who gets into trouble at school and against his fathers wishes decides to pursue a career as a singer instead of graduating.
Unfortunately this is one of the last movies Elvis showcased his acting talent before being cast in run-of-the-mill musicals to fit around the soundtracks. Not that these weren't fun and succesful at the box office, they just didn't show Elvis' acting at it's best.

My first Elvis and the one considered to be his best, and I can see why.
A good story, good songs, its directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca), a supporting cast that includes Walter Matthau & Carolyn Jones (Morticia Adams) and Elvis can act.
The only issue I have is that when Elvis has to get up and perform the songs featured in the film, he loses all trace of the character he's playing and reverts to the 'Elvis' persona.
I realise that when these were made, Elvis was the draw not the film but you could see those scenes in isolation and not know they were from a film. I have other Elvis films stacked up ready to watch, so I'll just have to get used to that.
