King Kong
1976 Directed by John Guillermin
Synopsis
The most exciting original motion picture event of all time.
In this remake of the 1933 classic about the giant ape, an oil company expedition disturbs the peace of Kong and brings him back to New York to exploit him. Even though a woman somewhat tames Kong, he finally breaks loose and terrorizes the city, and as the military attempt to stop him, he falls to his death from the top of the World Trade Center.

This movie seems to get a lot of hate but I really do love it. Honestly it probably has to do with nostalgia and the fact that it's the first Kong movie I watched but maybe not. It doesn't follow the original story and I haven't even seen much of the original it was just to old for my liking but maybe some day. I think Jeff Bridges adds a lot to this film, Charles Grodin is well Charles Grodin, and Jessica Lang is basically a pretty face that Kong wants. When I was a kid this move captivated my imagination it was so epic and larger than life to me. Today ya it's…

I think between this and the 2005 version of King Kong, there's a great movie. It seems everything that this was lacking was presented in spades in the Jackson version, and everything that's lacking in that film is done properly here.
Strong character work, good acting (love Charles Grodin), good dialogue, good story, good pacing...but the action just sucks. It plain sucks. Almost everything beyond the wall on the island is not good. Maybe a scene or two is acceptable, but most of it is pathetic by today's standards. Thankfully, that part of the movie is mercifully short. This also works against the story, because the adventure element is almost non-existent.
For all this movie does well, in the end, it's just not very entertaining.

I've heard a rumour that someone has made a version of this film that features a giant Ikea Monkey mercilessly humping every tall building in New York...
I desperately hope the rumour is true.

There are two things about this movie that make me give more credit to it than it deserves. For one, I'm biased towards King Kong. It's a fantastical story. And two, I just love movies from the 70's. They have a certain feel that can't be matched.
But that being said, this isn't a very good adaption of the classic Kong tale.
In the 1933 original, Karl Denham is a filmmaker, in this 1976 adaption, he is an oil big-shot who is serching for new oil reserved on a rumoured deserted isle. Now, that fact leads to some interesting and fresh ideas in the story, but it also drops some. And I mean drops them. What would an oil tycoon…

Rick Baker, in a gorilla suit, lusts after Jessica Lange. And who can blame him. This is my favorite version of King Kong. I'm not saying it's better than the original. It's just the one I like the best.

Jeff Bridges. He's a good man. With glorious hair. And the ability to be the best thing in a shitty movie like this.
The 1933 King Kong had some otherwordly creepiness about him, created by the twitchy stop-motion.
The 2005 King Kong has incredible depth in his facial expressions and movements, created by the motion capture technology.
The 1976 King Kong is a guy in an ape suit. And a huge mechanical hand.Horrible script, bad acting, lackluster action and dull direction makes this one of the most disappointing remakes ever.
