Reviews of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 2005

There's a giant coincidence in the second act, but this remains a very fun comedy, detective thriller, action movie that also takes a bit of the piss out of Hollywood. It's Shane Black so, of course, it's set at Christmas. And there is funny henchmen banter. As a movie artifact, it's interesting to see Downey play a dumb guy. As I was watching I kept thinking about how much I'd love to see this as a television series.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a perfect example of balance in a film. The amount of comedy balances the amount of rather morbid events and the mystery that is included in the movie. At the same time, the entire movie is meta, self-aware, and it illustrates many themes and ideas (I won't spoil them). It had me smiling about half of the time and the other half was excellent scenes of crime, mystery and romance. The comedy overlapped with all…

After watching and enjoying Iron Man 3, I received a recommendation to watch this movie to get another batch of Robert Downey Jr. and Shane Black. I'm quite happy I finally took that advice, because this was a very entertaining move to watch. However, to enjoy it, a person needs to accept a couple of things.
One, you are going to hear Downey speak a lot. It is him at his Downeyest best, though in this instance, where he is…

Trying to catch up on my Shane Black after enjoying Iron Man 3 so much, I've been told to watch this by friends for years but was avoiding because I'm not a big fan of 'crime' films. (I know that covers a hell of a lot of films, I can't really explain what I mean, this just didn't look like my bag.)
I wish someone had just told me this is a comedy!
Sometimes I thought the film was a…

So Good. This movie's neo-noir atmosphere is fun. Robert Downey Jr. is so good and he and Val Kilmer are great together. I love the self-conscious voice-over narration in which Robert Downey Jr. begins telling the story, then decides he's doing it wrong and backs up. Just hilarious.

Is it action? Comedy? Thriller? Mystery? Noir? Buddy cop? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, kind of, but without the badge. This film has it all and because the story is so rich and the cast is so perfect in each role this gem is one of my favorite films of all time. I seriously cannot get enough of this film.
The film is narrated by RDJs character Harry as he recollects the events of last Christmas where he went from…

This had come out during what I refer to as my "black" period where I ended up not seeing anything that was being released at the time due to life issues. And it's never shown up on Netflix or the like so it just never crossed my path until I went out of my way to finally buy the blu-ray. The dialog and Robert Downey Jr were the only solitary aspects of Iron Man 3 I enjoyed so I wanted…

Film #12 - June challenge
Val, Robert and Michelle were awesome. An enjoyable comedy thriller with very amusing and witty dialogue.

The June Challenge #14
The awkward part of multi-genre films is balancing the various styles, something Kiss Kiss Bang Bang does exceptionally. It's just as much a captivating piece of modern noir as it is a sharp comedy. Does Downey's narration get smug and self-indulgent? A little. Does it stop this movie from being utterly delightful? Nope. -
I want to rewind and rewatch everything from the beginning.
An irreverent mush of genres with three sharp, wry performances and a killer script by Shane Black.
Message to Shane Black: well done. Iron Man 3 was pretty enjoyable. It had some depth and some cool lines. Honestly, I never thought I'd see a superhero in a tentpole blockbuster have PTSD breakdowns and call a kid a pussy.
You've written and directed a movie that grossed…

Such a fun film to watch. One of my favorites of the last decade.
This was the return of Shane Black. Upon hearing of his writing and directing of this film it quickly became highly anticipated. I made sure to see it as soon as it came out and I wasn't disappointed. It was like being reunited with an old friend.
Black's writing is as sharp as ever here. So many hilarious lines that could only come from him. The…
