There are moments so emblematic and flawlessly of the 80s that it has aged into some sort of accidental classic. The story is simplicity externalized, the characters are surface-level faces and the visuals are grandiose and colorful. I miss evil demon faces and impaling in kids films.

From the sky will come the Black Fortress. From the Fortress will come the Slayers to devour the planet of Krull. Then shall a girl of ancient name become queen...she shall choose a king...and together they shall rule the planet. And their son shall rule the galaxy.
Hell yeah!
Whenever you feel the need to defend a film every chance you get you know you're in trouble. It's probably bad. This film for me is Krull. This unbelievably strange fantasy/science fiction hybrid is a film I for some reason or other totally adore.
It has bandits, a cyclops a magician and evil creatures. It's basically Robin Hood with aliens. It's cheesy, campy fun and I love it.
So sue me.

This is without a doubt one of the best 80's fantasy films, which is funny since this coincidentally was playing on Starz the day before I downloaded the Film Junk podcast crew's Premium podcast of "*0's fantasy films" (which I highly recommend if you enjoy them banter about film). I just had to watch it since it had been about 2-3 years, and this is always a very fun watch.
Now say all you want about the cheesiness of this, but if you try and tell me you didn't have fun while watching it, I'll call you a liar and an asshole. IMO this has it all, fun characters, good story, action and adventure, you can't ask for much more.…

both sci-fi and fantasy thrive on rich stylisation, and restraint. krull has neither. krull is a clusterfuck of ideas which range from cliche to ridiculously bad, with a cheesy script to top it off.
even so, i found myself passively interested in some elements of the story, and most of the film's sets are gorgeous and atmospheric.
krull is a special kind of bad, and i can see why some people like it.

Terrible, but amazing. And who didn't play games outside featuring that throwing star thing?

When a prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet adventure ensues......
This was movie that I rented from the video shop many times as a kid, but could never get past through the first 10 minutes, it has taken til now to finish. Most notable for its use of British actors who would go on to bigger and better things, Liam Neeson, Robbie Coltrane, Todd Carty and of course the score , a fantastic orchestral score written by James Horner, although it does sound very very similar to Wrath of Khan.
Very silly and very cheesy, the sort of movie that only the 1980s could produce but still pretty good fun, if in the right mood. -
One of the best 80s fantasy adventures. It's got deadly magic weapons, a cyclops, and Liam Neeson. The only fault would be some scenes drag endlessly, though when good its a compelling mashup of prime fantasy tropes.

It may be old, but it never GETS old.

Not very good, but with a lot of neat ideas and cool mythology. Plus, Robbie Coltrane in a haircut that will surprise.

scifi aliens invade a fantasy planet in their space mountain that moves every morning. A princess is kidnapped and kept inside said mountain where it's all a bit weird and psychedelic by a soft focus creature from the black lagoon lookalike.
Our Hero (the princesses husband to be) sets off on a quest to save her, gathering along the way a rubbish magician, a low rent Obi Wan, a gang of robbers (including Liam Neeson, Hagrid and Tucker from Grange Hill) and a badly made up cyclops with an awesome and sad backstory. They encounter much peril and danger along the way but by the end good triumphs and evil fails.
A childhood favourite that i've not seen in years and I still really enjoyed. SFX may have dated but it has enough style and certainly more imagination than the majority of the scifi/fantasy films churned out following Star Wars.
