Really one of the lesser/stranger MST3K episodes I've ever seen, despite (or perhaps also because of) the sorta brilliant riff on 2001 at the tail end. The host segments, while often flimsy in the individual gags, nevertheless have a certain crazy traction with just how far the GO for it. Still, this is the kind of B movie I think they're simply nasty towards, and most of their contextual humor just isn't very funny. As for the film proper, LOVE those aliens, and the whole thing has a kind of "aw shucks" enthusiasm to it that easily overcomes the rough and undercooked nature of what Mike helpfully describes as "second unit footage." I'm hunting this one down in its proper format.

MST3K commentary was particularly funny on this one.
"Are y'all ready for some FOOT-BALL!?!?"

Had Laserblast not been contemporaneous with Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I think it might have killed the sci-fi genre. That's hyperbole, I'm sure, but this is the rare sort of awful that inspires overreaction. It's just designed to be mercilessly mocked by MST3K. The stop-motion effects, nonsensical plotting and wooden acting make this B-movie magic.
