Boy, did this age about as well as a pair of sweaty socks.
I first saw this when I was about twelve and hadn't seen it since. I remembered really loving it then. I guess all of its magic is lost on me now.
I will say this, it still looks amazing. It has a kind of ethereal glow that is very appealing and the make up and set pieces are wonderful. And yes, Tim Curry steals the show completely as the devilish bad guy.
And that's about as positive as I can be. Everything just feels dull. The plot is straightforward and predictable. It lacks and enormous amount of creativity. But the dullness is best reflected in Cardboard Cruise's performance. He lacks any form of charisma here which makes it nearly impossible to root for him.
I can still see why I liked it then, but every spark of movie magic has now completely vanished I'm afraid.

"Liiiiiiiillllllyyyyyy!!!!" "Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccccccckkkkk!!!!"
What did I just watch? Absolutely beautiful to look at - this is definitely the most visually sumptuous film I've seen in a long time - but utterly batshit crazy. It actually has some genuinely unsettling moments, and the make-up effects by Rob Bottin are superb, but it's kitsch and camp in the extreme, the dialogue is appalling, and its ultimately really hard to take any of it seriously. Ridley Scott's genius as a visual artist shines through throughout, but to go from ALIEN to BLADE RUNNER to this is somewhat mind-boggling.
Note: I watched the director's cut with the Jerry Goldsmith music, not the theatrical version scored by Tangerine Dream.

Honestly, the acting of Tom Cruise and Mia Sara was just as restrained as the cheesy story itself. However, it did not bother me in the slightest. Because the movie scores with fabulous images of clichéd fantasy worlds. In almost every scene some stuff flying through the air which enriches the scenes in a beautiful way.
If you like old-fashioned fantasy stories, this movie is a real eye candy. -
Wow. Ridley Scott made an epic fairy-tale movie unlike any other. Captivating atmosphere, very dark set-pieces... and the combination of Rob Bottin's make-up with Tim Curry's acting is a masterpiece. Just be sure you watch the Director's Cut with the score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Style over substance? Maybe, but we're talking style of the highest quality. I simply adore the atmosphere and ambiance of this film, and Tim Curry's performance as The Lord of Darkness is simply brilliant!

When Labyrinth is one of your favourite films of all time, it's hard for another fantasy adventure to compare. Legend is certainly a visual treat - we have Ridley Scott to thank for that - but it has aged awfully and it lacks any of the same creativity and imagination that similar films (reminding me in a part of The Never Ending Story as well) are immersed in. Tom Cruise is a very on/off actor in my eyes and seeing him run around in his pants (unlike Risky Business) didn't do it for me this time. It really was all about Tim Curry.

I was very excited to watch this film, (Tom Cruise + fantasy + Sloane + early R Scott) and I enjoyed it a lot. Demented and dark with amazing, rich imagery.

This is cheating a little as I kind of only half had my eye on it whilst doing other things. I've seen it before but not written a review. I just wanted to record a couple of thoughts.
1 - Tim Curry is such a great character actor. The extraordinary lengths he went through in make-up, yet still managed to be so full of expression, is testament to this talent. He stole the show whenever he was on screen.
2 - Apart from his hair, Tom Cruise doesn't age. He looks the same here as he does nowadays. It's frightening.
3 - Fantasy adventure stories have some of the most cringeworthy, unbearably turgid dialogue of any genre. I know it's…

De las mejorcitas de la época y PURPURINAS POR TODAS PARTES. Salen unicornios que eso siempre está bien.

Cine fantástico artesanal con Tim Curry. En general vengo a decir que TIM CURRY. TIM CURRY.
Nota final: TIM CURRY / 10 -
Aged nicely and harkens back to a day where filmmakers dreamed big, and they had the challenge figuring out how to bring those images to the screen. CGI would have absolutely ruined this film.
