Day eight of the Bond Film Marathon, film 8: Live And Let Die.
New era, New face, you know the number. The 70's surely peaked with four Bond adventures with it's newest man behind the tux, Roger Moore. Adapting Fleming's second-written novel, Live And Let Die is a load of escapist fun with plenty action, humor, women, and Bond's quips & puns and a great theme song.In this adventure, Mr. Big has a plan to distribute heroin in order to put out rival drug kingpins out of business. Meanwhile three agents are killed mysteriously under voodoo pretensions and Bond is called to action. Bond then meets face to face in Harlem, New York with Mr. Big, who is the disguised…

Part of:
Dr. No-vember or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bond FilmsWhite face in Harlem. Good thinking, Bond!
-StrutterDiamonds Are Forever clumsily brought James Bond into the 70s with a bit of an identity crisis. It tried to recreate the status quo of the Bond film by maybe Americanizing the plot a little too much. Having Sean Connery return in the role certainly made the changes harder to accept, at least to me anyhow. Enter Roger Moore to usher in the new era of 007.
That is perhaps the strongest part of the film. It becomes much easier to accept this new take on the character by having a new leading man as Bond.…

The Journey to Skyfall continues with the Eighth Bond film, and first Roger Moore outing, Live and Let Die!
I'm notably in the minority on this particular Bond outing, but I really like it. It's Bond and Blaxploitation, and it surprisingly mixes well, at least for me. After all, Bond films are meant to capture the era of Action Cinema that they inhabit, and Live and Let Die certainly does that.
Bond Essentials Review:
Bond: Before I review Moore for this film, I'd like to get something out of the way since we're about to enter the Roger Moore era.
I don't call any Bond "Best" or "Worst" since they were all fantastic in their own right. Each has their…

It's with great trepidation that I start Phase II of my Bond Marathon before the release of Skyfall. This second part consists of the Roger Moore era, who up till now I've considered my least favourite incarnation of Ian Fleming's James Bond.
First off... the pre credits sequence is a lot darker than I remembered. In fact, for the most part, the tone throughout this film is on the money. The adaptation may be hideously loose and the depiction of Bond may be entirely wrong, but Guy Hamilton goes for a much more contemporary spin on proceedings.
What we have here is Bond rising like a phoenix from the ashes into a full blown Blaxploitation flick. It's cool, gritty and…

About halfway through Live And Let Die, after Jane Seymour invites him back to bed for seconds (the lucky, lucky swine), Roger Moore gives us the one-liner, "There's no sense going out half-cocked."
Under normal circumstances, it might just look like the archetypal Roger Moore era Bond one-liner, but actually it sums up this film pretty well. It was never going to be a smooth transition between Sean Connery and Moore, such very different choices for 007 that they were, and as such Live And Let Die is allowed to be a very different Bond film indeed. There are no half measures here at all, and it's completely the right choice.
So we get a blaxploitation, voodoo and horror filled…

Had some slow moments where I'd start to get bored, but makes up for it with a fucking ridiculous boat chase, a much more interesting plot than any previous Bond films, and a couple of good death scenes. The climactic scene, involving an explosive Yaphet Kotto, is incredible.

Roger Moore debuts as James Bond after Sean Connery's departure, and his unique interpretation of 007 gives him the man who has the longest run as Bond and a clear definition of ultra-smooth and suave sophistication for a Britigh secret agent.
After 3 MI6 agents are killed investigating the drug and voodoo activities of one Dr Kananga (Yaphet Kotto) in and around America and the Caribbean, 007 is sent to liase with CIA agent Felix Leiter (David Hedison) and find out what is being carried out behind a cover operation fronted by soul restaurants and mystical voodoo powers.
The virginal Bond girl Solitare (Jane Seymour) is a pawn in Kananga's game, abusing her trust and faith in Tarot reading as…

The more Bonds films I watch, the more I wonder what I saw in them when I was younger. I'm not sure if this is because I'm watching them all in a row without enough of a break in-between, but I can't see how a movie like this could be made these days.

Watched this so many times when I was younger, and still holds up as one of my favorites! Very creepy!

35mm: If that isn't one of the longest and best chases I've seen in a while. This movie was a blast on the big screen. I almost like Roger Moore as Bond now.

Live and Let Die is de negende Bondfilm in tien jaar. We schrijven 1973.
Live and Let Die is puur seventies-vertier. Het is blaxploitation met voodoo, matige komedie en net iets te Amerikaans voor een James Bond. De nieuwe weg die de Bondserie inslaat met Roger Moore is duidelijk. De spionnenfilm lijkt…
