Pretty rough. It felt strange that there was a late 80's Dan Aykroyd comedy that I somehow missed seeing so I wanted to remedy that right away. I'm a big fan of all 4 main contributors, director Bob Clark (Black Christmas, Deathdream, Porky's), writer Richard Matheson (Duel, Comedy Of Terrors), Gene Hackman and Aykroyd. But this felt like suffering and didn't work for me at all.
For example, one joke consists of Aykroyd and Hackman going through a sauna looking for a German suspect. Aykroyd fakes a huge sneeze, someone yells "Gesundheit" and they suddenly have their man. I've seen worse but this should have been awesome with all that talent involved.
You should hear the "Loose Cannons" theme song that plays over the end credits. It's sung by Katey Sagal and Aykroyd and it's some truly bizarre shit. Almost worth a watch for that alone.

Hackman and Aykroyd star in a buddy cop film that is a pure zanger.
There is some initial promise with a boatload of characters dressed as Alice in Wonderland characters being involved in a high speed boat chase. However, the comedic timing is often poor and this highlights how woeful some of the material is.
Aykroyd is quite the standout with an excruciatingly embarrassing performance. He apparently suffers multiple personality disorder and this is an excuse to hog the camera in the worst way possible. It also features one of the worst forced heart to heart moments in cinema history.
The only saving grace is Dom DeLuise as some type of pornographer and the possibility of a Hitler porn tape existing. Who knows why this tape is not mined at the finale for a guaranteed laugh. That sums up how clueless the film is.
The Reference: Sex fiends making too much noise.
