"You'll still go. I just may have to carry you."
What an unexpected treat! I struggled with the first portion because (a) I am not crazy about Jake Gyllenhaal and (b) the film tries too hard to establish the late-90's setting using music.
But the obsession with music fades. And then we get Annie Hathaway, who initially comes across as a slighly over-tall manic pixie dream girl. She gives a terrific performance as a young woman dealing with rare early-onset Parkinson's, and she transcends the manic pixie label by being her own person. She and Jake have excellent chemistry. And though the plot direction follows the predictable romcom trajectory, it's a satisfying and…

By now, I have become tired of watching the same old-but freshly remade, teary eyed, sweet climaxed rom-coms that Hollywood keeps shedding out restlessly.
Is there a Viagra to increase my hard on for such kind of movies?? And even if there was one It would not work.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this, I think having Jake really helped as HE'S SO BLOODY GORGEOUS and also very charming. The story was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be in the trailer and there weren't too many like, grand romantic rom com things that happened. No flash mobs, no shit like that. It seemed real and I had a little cry at the end.
Probably my favourite out of the 'friends with benefits' thing that has been done to death these past few years!

Surprisingly very affecting for me. There were a lot of gimmicks very typical of this kind of film (the schlubby supporting male pervert character, shoot me) but when you get away from that stuff, the central relationship between these two characters is fantastically done and had me hooked with ease. It doesn't hurt that Jake Gyllenhaal is at his most charming here, although he doesn't have to do a whole lot by way of emotional pull. So it's a charming performance but definitely not an outstanding one.
Anne Hathaway is the only real standout here, continuing her stretch of being an actress that just perplexes me. I had all but written her off as an actress that you see do…

A decent rom-com with two actors who work very well together.
Anne Hathaway has no qualms at all about getting her kit off, well with a figure like hers I suppose it's a case of 'if you've got it, flaunt it', and I'm not complaining.
I thought the plot was going to be about getting a cure for Maggie's (Hathaway) illness but it wasn't and although her condition is integral to the love story it's secondary overall to the progression Jamie (Gyllenhaal) makes in his career which ties back into the love story.
The soundtrack is good too with a few 1990s classics slipped in, the film opens with The Spin Doctors & Two Princes - a song I loved back then.

Love and Other Drugs is not a great film, but it is much better than most romantic comedies that have come out lately. I don`t know if you can call this a rom-com, it is much more dramatic and the comedy is left mostly for the supporting characters. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are both great actors and they have excellent chemistry together. They`ve worked together in the past when they played a couple in Brokeback Mountain, but this was a different type of film. The movie doesn`t just focus on the…

'Love and Other Drugs' is a decent, sometimes funny, romantic drama. The first twenty or so minutes are spent on developing Jamie - Jake Gyllenhaal's character - and his life in the eyes of the audience, but once he meets Maggie, things kick off and it turns out to be a very enjoyable piece.
I remember the first time I saw it, the movie made me think, "Whoa, what would I do in such a situation?" and it was all very thought-provoking and sad. But a rewatch seems to have been completely unnecessary. On the second viewing, nothing is new any longer and the film begins to feel a little tedious. If it weren't for Gyllenhaal's and Anne Hathaway's great performances, 'Love and Other Drugs' would have been nowhere near as nice and enjoyable as it is now.

Predictable, two actors I don't really care for, plot that I don't care for and then we get a sympathy card that tries to redeem the film. Don't waste your time.

I can't help but feel like this movie was ruined by studio interference. An otherwise semi-sweet romantic dramedy is derailed by the shoehorning in of slapstick and raunch comedy in the form of Josh Gad as Gyllenhal's brother. His character has absolutely no reason to be in this movie except to add broad comic relief (at which he fails anyway). The result is a film with an identity crisis, trying to cater to two very different audiences.
