Despite the positive word of mouth the thought of a Steven Soderbergh male stripper movie never sounded appealing and the end results were as disappointing as expected. I can only assume that the film was well received purely because people got to see Hollywood celebrities wear very little clothing and grind their crotches in women’s faces because it certainly wasn’t because of the story. As with all of Soderbergh’s recent films, Magic Mike, feels incomplete. Sub plots are started and…

A couple things I realized while watching this:

    1) I was right in my assumption that thrusting my pelvis into a woman's face is a total turn on for her.

    2) I just need to stop watching Soderbergh's movies.

I know that I am completely alone in my total ennui towards this guy, and I'm cool with that. But how did he elevate this material? By shooting everything through a doo doo-stained filter like he always does? I could put…

I'm actually very surprised how much I dug a film about male strippers. Tatum and McConaughey were great but I mostly credit Soderbergh. I really hope he continues to make more films. I'd definitely watch this again.

Only Soderbergh can mine any subject and come up with gold. Riches for everyone! The man better not retire.

Well... I didn't expect that. Instead of the male stripper romp this was advertised as, this turned out to be a very good casually paced drama about the business and the shitty life guys like Mike have to deal with. There was probably only 5 minutes of actual stripping. I don't think I've ever been that happy to be in a room full of disappointed women.

Steven Soderbergh is one of cinema’s greatest innovators of all-time; a man constantly challenging himself with unique, startling visions of his created universes, and someone who keeps his audiences fascinated no matter the subject matter. From the early days of something as mentally powerful as Sex, Lies and Videotape to the action-packed Ocean’s Eleven, Soderbergh is a great testament to the dynamism of a director’s work in this world of cinema we found ourselves in today. Much more forgotten in…

Romance novels? Chumon meow, that shit is so lo-fi. This is the new hi-resolution 5.1 surround sound sploosh material for ladies too uptight to watch porn! Personally, I wasn't particularly impressed. It only got a star and a half because I've had a boner for Matthew McConaughey ever since Dazed and Confused.

I actually liked this better than I thought I would. It was cruising along at about a 3, but I decided to give it 2 1/2 stars because I doubt I'll ever watch it again. There was nothing I loved and nothing I really hated about it, it just kind of exists I guess. I'm not homophobic or anything but a film about male strippers is a bit of a tough watch for a heterosexual male. To it's credit though…

It's the same scene, with different songs, over and over, for two hours. This is more of a music video than a film.

Film #1 of Cinebro's Tilting at Windmills Challenge

Oh, Soderbergh. I love him to pieces, but I really have to ask myself: what was the last capital-g Great film that he made? What recent film of his even cracked my personal Top 10 list for its release year? "Che," "The Girlfriend Experience," and "Bubble" were all fantastic but I wouldn't really call them epochal. I think I really have to go all the way back to "Traffic," 12 years and…
