Manslaughter
2012 ‘Doodslag’ Directed by Pieter Kuijpers
Synopsis
Doodslag (Dutch for "Manslaughter") is the story of Max, a paramedic who is repeatedly hindered in performing his duties by loutish behaviour. As his ambulance hurries towards a complicated childbirth, some youths prevent Max from reaching the distressed woman in labour. Spurred on by the emergency and the incendiary words of a TV pundit, he reaches a boiling point and forcefully hits one of the men obstructing his ambulance. Max's strike has far-reaching, unintended consequences.

Doodslag
Interesting morality tale from the Netherlands concerning Max, an ambulance driver who serves a year in prison for the manslaughter of a youth who was preventing him from attending an emergency.
The issue being examined here is, could force be justified, even if there was a slight possibility a man would be killed if that action were to save the lives of an unborn child and it's mother?
The film is especially interesting for the way it looks at the manipulation of public opinion. One day the public believe XYZ the next YZX. It all depends on the way the facts are spun.
Wasn't too keen on the style of Pieter Kuijpers direction and his use of music. Found the pacing a little choppy, stop, start, stop, start. Nevertheless, it's worth a watch.

I like the first half of the movie, unfortunately in the second half things get a little unjustified and the character reactions are a bit weird.
-
Facile Dutch morality tale that fails to capture a consistency of character, tone or style.
With such a wide reach aiming broad swipes at freedom of speech in the media as well as how to tackle teen delinquency, it has little focus and even less coherence.

The moral dilemma is a good starting point, but this movie was a letdown. Too much ideas, bad music, the acting wasn't great, and the plot with the 4 acts didn't work for me. The overall art direction sucked.
