A huge thanks to theNomad for recommending this film.
I have to admit I'm a little freaked out right now.
My nerves are shattered, and my mouth is completely dry. I don't think I have been that disgusted with something in... forever...
The nasty parts made my body go limp and shaky, while the scary parts made me tense up and whimper.... yes, it happened.
I think I'm still in shock. FREAKING LOVED IT! -
Holy shit it didn't take long this film to go bat-shit crazy, and I fucking loved every minute of it. It's one of the more unique horror films I've ever seen, and I recommend it to anyone who can stomach it.

Visually arresting French horror with something to say.
I was very impressed by this film, not only because of the incredible make-up effects which are truly horrifying at times, but also because of the way it is scripted. It manages to do something new with the genre and it cleverly and slowly unfolds an original plot which never ceased to intrigue me.
Yes, this is a relentless and disturbing film and certainly not for everyone. I never found it gratuitous, however, which often isn't the case in films like this.

I've gotten to a point in my life where, for the most part, horror movies don't scare me anymore. I've become desensitized, if you will. I partially blame a certain social network site I used to work for. I won't mention any names but MY job at this SPACE was filled with some interesting responsibilities. Some of which included reporting child pornography to the FBI and moderating content that included beheading videos and real death footage taken from hidden cams, among other things. Of course, there were also the regular work gems Lemon Party, Goatse, and Tub Girl. If you plan on looking these up, be warned...they are definitely gross and definitely NSFW. Besides that, you…

Part of **Halloween Season 2012**.
Dirk Hasselman's review says that this film is not actually gratuitous, and I am inclined to agree. It certainly could have been, especially by showing in gory detail the activity that leads to martyrdom at the end. That could have been horrific to see. Instead, they wisely only show the result -- which is more fascinating than vomitous.
Make no mistake, though: Martyrs is violent and sick, and it's certainly not an easy watch. I don't know that it's a horror movie, in the traditional sense. Yes, we have a few jump scares and some dark hallways. And the one time I really did look away was when the main character is going into a…

I'm not a big fan of torture porn horror, but this film is the only one I've seen that seriously uses the concept of torture porn in a thought provoking way that questions violence, it's effects and our relationship to it. Yes, it's unrelenting, brutal and bleak, but all this is in service of interesting ideas that go beyond what the genre usualy offers, undermining the genre, constantly turning it on its head to raise interesting questions.

I honestly have no idea of how to rate this

Hands down my favorite horror movie of all time. I watch it every couple of months to remind myself just how visceral and gory and fucked up the horror genre can be. With all this generic crap in the mainstream lately, it can be hard to remember that. I've seen it nine or ten times and it never, ever fails to punch me in the gut and leave me reeling. This is just about as brutal as it gets. I really wish that Laugier's Hellraiser remake would have gotten off that ground because that would have been a sight to see.

EXCELENTE!

Despite being very jumpy when it comes to horror films, I'm very hard to actually scare but bloody hell, Martyrs did it.
The film was fast paced, uniquely frightening, the actual idea was brilliant, the casting was spot on and the makeup was incredible.
It was unique, different and frightening. I'm not sure what else to say, a horror classic.

yay, torture porn!

Wow. You've heard people discuss it. You've absorbed the Buzz. You've heeded the warnings, but nothing actually quite prepares you for this one. A sensory onslaught of pain and torment, "Martyrs" thankfully has some intelligence and integrity behind its gruesome exterior, exploring contemporary themes of regret, pain and the potential spiritual rewards of enduring endless horror. Hard to sit through, and not remotely enjoyable, but well crafted and incredibly powerful none the less.
