Memories is an animated anthology series based on three unrelated science fiction stories by the great Katsuhiro Otomo. As with all anthology films the quality between stories is inconsistent but this doesn’t stop Memories from being one of the finest examples of the ‘genre’. Because each story is unconnected they can be watched individually or in any order but this review follows the original intended order.
Magnetic RoseThe opening short film, and my personal favourite, is an operatic sci-fi thriller that is indebted to the titans of science-fiction cinema. When a group of salvage workers respond to a distress call in outer space they find themselves trapped on an opulent but nightmarish spacecraft that blends the memories of its…

Memories is a series of short stories, each written and directed by different people and hailed personalities in the Anime community. They are vastly different in both content and aesthetics, especially the 3rd one.
The first segment is in my opinion the best of the three. Satoshi Kon, who is quickly becoming one of my all-time favourite directors, is again at a creative high and manages to create an Alien-esque atmosphere of dread and isolation within the constraints of just 40 odds minutes. Alien is probably Kon's greatest influence when he wrote this and director Morimoto recognized this and adequately designed it. It looks brilliant and make these 40 minutes of Sci-Fi a joy to look at. It's gritty, dark…

The first story is fantastic and should be made into a live action movie.
The other two are boring.

Wow, this was some experience! Comprised of three segments by three different directors, this one is a mind bender mixed with the kind of satire that's spawned from hopelessness. The first and the last segments are extremely thought provoking and beautiful while the second is humorous, fast and absolutely crazy! Out-of-the-world animation, and the themes explored are of profound relevance. Damn good.

Sci-fi anthology by some of the anime super-luminaries. It's not perfect, but the first story - Magnetic Rose - is worth the admission price alone.

Magnetic Rose alone makes this worth seeing, absolute perfection from the genius Satoshi Kon. The Animation is beautiful, and the story is amazing, immensely atmospheric, and incredibly suspenseful. It doesn't overstay its welcome in length, but it does leave you wanting a lot more, something that the other two films can't provide. Stink Bomb and Cannon Fodder do, however, serve as great visual treats.

Part 1: 4 Stars
Objectively the best of the 3. Almost scary at parts and very interesting.Part 2: 2 Stars
More of a comedic story.Part 3: 3 Stars
Shorter than the others and would have been cool if we actually saw the enemy, unless the lights at the end were them? I don't know. -
