Incredible sequel that still has my head spinning and heart pounding! The story was crazier than a soup sandwich! How a sociopathic cold blooded killer could outwit the police for decades is just beyond me! While he was intelligent, his ego and arrogance would ultimately lead to his undoing!
Vincent Cassel is no longer a young and promising actor, he has become the quintessential actor!
In my review of part one of this double feature, I mentioned a downside to the film was that things seemed very embellished and hard to believe. Well…I must say, it was only after finishing this second and final film that I went onto my good friend Wikipedia to read up on the true story of Jacques Mesrine…and shockingly enough, somehow/someway…a lot of this crazy shit actually happened. I guess I should never assume.
Anyways…onto the film itself. This second part is pretty much comparable to the first. Lots of violence, lots of action, very well executed…all around very entertaining, although maybe a little bit more methodical than the first film. I honestly have nothing valuable to add when comparing…
Film Number 14 in Blair's March Around the World, 2021
Country: France/Canada/Italy
Earlier on Sunday I reviewed Part 1 of this two movie story about infamous French criminal Jacques Mesrine. Reading that review before this one is important as I said plenty there and that will allow me to be more brief here. Now here are my thoughts on Part 2. It is not too much different from Part 1 aside from this covering the last few years of his life, when he was really out of control, a brash braggadocios jerk who loves to charm the media but he'll humiliate them if someone writes an article he loathes. As this features an escape from a hearing in court, an…
That poster tells you everything you need to know about Jean-Francois Richet's thrillingly violent part II of his film about Jacques Mesrine. As Public Enemy #1, our bank robbing psychopath/sociopath (take your pick) is only going to end up one way....dead.
As biopics go this has been fairly entertaining. We get a distinctive view of what Jacques Mesrine was really like, but it does seem like we've only just scratched the surface. A complex man with a psyche as complicated as a bag of cats, he never seems to have any peace between robbing casinos, robbing banks, and escaping from jail. One of the things that baffled me here is how bad his disguises were. He's infamous, a wanted man,…

Film Mesrine: Public Enemy – Film 14 – France
Who knew Bruce Springsteen had an evil French separated-at-birth Twin!
Well this was a rollicking good time, proving the French can hold their own with the Americans, Koreans, and Brits in the charming gangster genre.
While I think Vincent Cassel, as the boyish bandit Mesrine, oversold the role a bit, there’s no denying he’s one charming guy. Mathieu Amalric, as his stoic partner in crime François Besse was absolutely perfect with his projection of both menace and fear.
Despite the nimble timing and perfectly paced and judicious shoot-em-ups, Mesrine: Public enemy isn’t without it’s warts. Whenever it tries to be tender…
quite an improvement on the first one with more action, violent and good soundtrack vinz cooked as usual, overall successful sequel
361.
Not as fast-paced as Killer Instinct but still very engrossing. Again, Cassel is fantastic as the despicable (but interesting and compelling) titular character.
Eschews the moral handwringing of American gangster movies for something more complicated. The two films elects to simply document Mesrine's increasingly bold criminal exploits (and base on a quick look at Jacques Mesrine's Wikipedia page rather accurately too) and offers no explanation for Mesrine's behaviour. This leads to our central character being a fascinating contradiction; in one scene he might be charming, funny, and intensely likeable and in the next a violent and sadistic brute.
It's a great approach to a biopic, fully embracing the conflicting events of a truly bizarre life, and Vincent Cassel is more than up to the challenge. He fully embodying all these different personas and drawing all together into a coherent person, all the while being incredibly watchable. The two films are built entirely on his shoulders.
Summer of Scam 2: Criminally Insane
A surprising upgrade on Killer Instinct, mostly down to the fact there is more action and drive in this.
It's still far from entirely satisfying at times and Jean-Francois Richet still finds himself rushing this story at key moments. How he manages that with so much time to fill is ridiculous, really, but one can't discount the two absolutely stunning scenes that are in this.
The end demise of Mesrine is brilliantly done from start to finish. Richet covers all the angles here, and all the relevant characters, dragging out the inevitable but still managing to make it feel extremely tense. There's not enough of that side of his direction in either of these…
