.......John Travolta is an Angel of death......
Well, he sure kills this film.

This was on TBS at like 4 AM when I was trying to go to sleep. Thought process: "Michael? I haven't seen that since I was like 8. Oh man, and Nora Ephron just died. Eh, why not?" Because I'm an insomniac, I wound up watching the whole thing. It's a far cry from Ephron's best work, but for a movie centered around John Travolta playing a really sloppy angel, it is surprisingly pleasant and amusing, and sometimes--especially at 4 AM--that's all you need.

Fairly average "feel-good" movie with a surprisingly flat direction and script from Nora Ephron (though, to be fair, she and three others were credited for the screenplay). As often is the case, in absence of a strong screenplay, we are once again subjected to the use of tired popular songs to convey the film's messages. And once again these songs are distracting and get in the way of soliciting the response they were looking for by using the song in the first place.
William Hurt is a fine actor, yet seems out of place in this movie playing his character. Andie McDowell has a nice scene singing in the bar, but the extra half a star is for John Travolta's…

I watched this drama comedy for the first time in laserdisc, Michael is annoyingly funny and memorable, there are several comical and cute moments that I find appalling. John Travolta was superb in portraying an archangel named Michael, whom unlike the way of angels portrayed as gracious, he is clumsy, sluggish, foods-munching and obese. Michael isn’t your average angel and again, John Travolta is awesome. Supported with other phenomenal casts such as the ever loveable Andie McDowell, Bob Hoskins, as well as the cynical William Hurt. Michael is awesomely wrapped with a core message that everybody should be thankful. This film also has its own unique twist courtesy of director Nora Ephron.
