Synopsis
Family saga taking place mostly in a small Slovakian village. The film captures the period of thirty years (1887-1917). The first part captures the life of Martin Pichandu in the development of his craft, masonry, in the second part, his son is centre stage living in a period of socio-political crisis, which ultimately resulted in the first World War.

The Millennial Bee, to give it one of its many translated titles, is a pastoral epic from Czechoslovakia. Chronicling thirty years in the life of a family at the turn of the last century, the film is a beautifully photographed with a surprisingly light touch. Best described as magical realism, the film frequently features supernatural elements that weave in and out of the more grounded familial drama.
The film’s great strength is undoubtedly in its stunning camerawork. It is amazing that this was Stanislav Dorsic’s first film as a DoP when he clearly has such a mastery of his craft. The use of a light (which also seems to signal major dramatic moments in the film) is staggeringly beautiful in…
