zack clark's little sister was one of my favorite films from last year so i was eager to check out the rest of his filmography. this is his 2009 debut and it's safe to say that he's quickly becoming a favorite of mine. this boy is onto something.
it's only the second i've seen of his so far, but his thing seems to be extremely reserved and subdued female leads that slowly open up as the film goes along. it's that carefully crafted and deserved emotional resonance with his characters that i loved most about little sister and modern love is automatic does it even more effectively. melodie sisk as lorraine schultz is a revelation.
you can find this on vimeo & little sister is currently on netflix
i already gave out 5 stars 5 times this year this is a first since i barely ever give em out. i tried talking myself into settling on 4.5 for this but its a 5 what can i do!
every time i remember (biweekly and i'm writing this in 2020...) that i rented this on vimeo instead of buying it and that now it's been deleted and i'll never watch it again, i want to kill myself
I had no idea that I would enjoy this movie so much, but damn if it's not fun. Melodie Sisk is fantastic as Lorraine, the nurse who dabbles at being a dominatrix, but excels at apathy.
I'm anxiously looking forward to seeing more from both Ms. Sisk and director Zach Clark.

Zach Clark is a funny and twisted bastard. Like Little Sister and White Reindeer that followed it, Modern Love is Automatic finds an odd woman in a peculiar situation - this time being an apathetic dominatrix who is going through a bizarro coming of age story. Sisk is totally game and brilliant, her reactions and comedic timing will have you in stitches as she successfully delivers an affecting character that says little more then "ok", "yeah", "mmhmm" and "no". Clark's writing and direction are on-point, it is a remarkably self-assured debut, although not as refined or as emotionally moving as his later work. It isn't for all tastes, but it is supremely funny and Sisk is awesome.
An incredibly assured debut from Zach Clark, revisited this morning prior to the screening of his new film White Reindeer. Clark is another filmmaker on the periphery of the mumblecore/Slackervetes movement, noted for having edited the wonderful Aaron Katz debut Dance Party USA but to associate his work with that style would be inaccurate to say the least. His films are low budget and they feature naturalistic performances (even in slightly surreal situations and presentations) but Modern Love is much more obvious in its careful construction with a huge amount of attention paid to location dressing and costume to create meaning and humour. And this is a funny movie.

I watched this on Vimeo back when it was readily available and my biggest regret is not downloading it for keeps. Anyone have a lead on where I can find this?
Now that I’ve finished Zach Clark’s movies there is nothing I need like a box set of these. I think this might be my least favorite purely cause I feel like it’s tonally the least consistent but when it’s on it’s just as on. The central premise is that love is such a goal driven endeavor now and someone like Lorraine literally can’t approach it in any genuine capacity and when it’s Melodie Sisk running a scene it’s good. But then we get the subplots like the mattress salesman and I understand that it’s like selling the illusion of getting to sleep in a nice bed with a hot woman… but it sorta pulled away from the main appeal. Usually…
