Even though it's not a completely silent movie, it sure proves dialogue is sometimes completely unnecessary.
Sheer genius.

To quote the late great Siddhartha Gautama:
"Mr. Chaplin, you are indeed an asstastic moviemancer. Tits rule."
Charlie is one talented dude. He's a talented actor. He's a talented director. And he's a talented mustache. MODERN TIMES is a funny, heartfelt, thoroughly entertaining romp through a world ruled by industry. I felt like some of the gags ran too long and I had the occasional "Ha, good one, Chaplin" moment, but I have those all the time so it wasn't that big of a deal. All in all, a very fun movie.
P.S. Paulette Goddard is like whoa beautiful.

Amazing on so many levels. Chaplin is, of course, a master. This film remains poignant, funny and moving. Wonder if "The Artist" will play as well in 75 years. No chance.

Another one off my list of shame. What can I say? It is as brilliant, as funny, as essential as people say. Bigger than cinema, something not just meaningful in a proto way, but genuinely better, improved upon what exists today. A classic.

As amazing as City Lights was, I think I liked Modern Times even more. Chaplin is quickly becoming one of my favorite performers/filmmakers. He was one talented son of a gun!

A tramp as a sheep
Lost in the cogs.
Voices of the machines
A man finally speaks
And walks into the sunrise.

A clever albeit overdrawn commentary on the dehumanising effect the Industrial Revolution had on the urban worker.

a silent classic, with the same kind of dark, subversive humour that orwell used. would make a great double feature with tati's playtime.

"We'll get a home, even if I have to work for it."
A lovable lead performance from Chaplin, excellent comedy and social commentary makes Modern Times the quintessential Chaplin film.
The film follows a factory worker (Charles Chaplin) as he struggles to gain a job and earn a living for his new found love, a young homeless woman (Paulette Goddard). This story is garnished with political commentaries and a depiction of the working class in a 'modern industrial society'.
The plot isn't particularly elaborate, as you might come to expect from a Chaplin film. The films structure reminds me of City Lights , how The Tramp stumbles into a new environment, performances a comedy routine and then leaves. You would…

Im starting to watch certain directors films. First was Hitchcock, Second was Kubrick and now I started with Chaplin. This movie is extremely funny with a great performance by Chaplin. For a 1936 film this had a phenomenal script with excellent filming and editing plus great music. Its an overall amazing film. I first am going to see most of his movies so that way I can determine which is the best. This is an amazing film!
