It can't quite get over the inherently silly premise of multiple people being terrorised by a capuchin monkey, but the fact that it remains sporadically tense and creepy is testament to what Romero is capable of in the genre.
The human performances are grounded by the central plot of a man trapped in his own body and the psychological effect that has on him. By taking a relatively serious approach to that it has the dual effect of grounding the more outrageous elements, but unfortunately it also throws them into sharp relief.
The animal performances rank among the best but there's only so far a primate performance can stretch credulity.
As monkey-based horrors go, it's far from a howler.

Director George A. Romero is known as a pioneer of visceral horror. His explicit, graphic works ironically helped both to stigmatize horror with mainstream audiences and yet oddly legitimize it with many critics. Always provocative, he has hence become something of a cult director, with several of his films perennially popular at midnight movie screenings. His gory Living Dead trilogy is at the forefront of intelligent, adult horror although he has been less able to find success outside of these zombie movies and his association with friend Stephen King (they collaborated on the original Creepshow, with Romero later helming the adaptation of The Dark Half). After his Day of the Dead was widely considered by critics to be a letdown,…

A bit of drama about the human and the animal condition, crazy science fiction involving experimental smart drugs, and the odd scare. With these ingredients, Romero made a film far more interesting than it seems at first glance. A different, more forceful ending might have resulted in a better film, but not all movies end the way we'd like.

Romero shows surprising patience in setting this film up, and that works well to balance out the inherent silliness of the premise.

I enjoyed this.
A pretty interesting concept, very much in keeping with that era of cinema for this genre. It had some nice effects (courtesy of Mr Savini), and a decent soundtrack.
The monkey (or monkeys, I'm not sure how many they used) was really well utilised, and made for some good moments.
I paticularly enjoyed the final scare.
I wasn't 100% on the psychic connection thing, but it was workable, and without it the film may have lacked some of the excitement.Overall, a decent one to catch if you're a fan of the genre, although it did seem a little drawn out for the last 30-40 minutes.

Romero fazendo filme B parecer filme, ahn, não-B.

Very creepy yet also kind of dumb horror movie. If I ever get paralyzed please for the love of goodness do not get me a creepy monkey slave.
