Charlize Theron should have got two Oscars for this. An utterly blood chilling performance. I sometimes forgot that it was Theron on screen. Such was her transformation into character of Aileen Wuornos. Honestly according to me this must be one of the best female lead performance ever on cinema. Truly unbelievable.

In one of the greatest performances of all time, Female serial killer Aileen Wuornos is portrayed by Billy Bob Thrornton. What a performance! and I thought the man was great in 'Bad Santa' wow what an actor!
In all seriousness this is a great film. Charlize Theron's performance is as good as you've heard and maybe even better. The cliche term ''A roller coaster of emotions'' may have never been more suited for a film than it is for 'Monster', because it was just that, such an emotive and gripping film. Absolutely unforgettable and heartbreaking.

There's an old saying in Hollywood that taking a hot actress and turning a hot actress ugly for a film makes for a terrific, or even Oscar worthy performance.
Whether that's true or not (it is) that's up for debate, but if it is true it certainly worked for Charlize Theron. Not only is she absolutely amazing in this film, she makes audiences around the world question whether or not they still wanted to "hit that".

Monster has many things going for it, but despite its obvious qualities I was underwhelmed and hugely disappointed by it. This is essentially Charlize Theron's film and one that screams “Gimme an Oscar” as her performance is smack in your face constantly, and includes the novelty of seeing her be ugly for the first and probably only time ever. Unfortunately, she struck me as overbearing and too on-the-nose to really convince me. It's clear that she put a lot of effort into it, but I would've loved a slightly more subtle approach over this. While it certainly leaves an impression and baffles anyone who knows what she really looks like, I found her performance to be rather detrimental.

A memorable film, mostly due to the chilling performances by Charlize and Christina. The film itself is not extraordinary, in fact the script romance was often underwhelming and had so much more potential that it ever managed to pull off. An emotionally gripping drama that will have you tied up in all different ways, and an interesting story that attempts to provide an insight to the mind of a killer. It almost succeeds, but the writing often proved to be lackluster.
I don't know how to describe Charlize's performance, other than she made me genuinely scared and uncomfortable to watch her. Her performance was executed brilliantly, and definitely makes this film worth a watch. So give it a shot, it had a nice score which always earns points in my book.

Charlize Theron fully deserved her Oscar (amongst numerous other awards) for the astonishing, fiery, transfixing performance she delivers in this film. Every detail, from the twitching eyes and aggressive body language to the emotional explosions and subtle expressiveness, is simply outstanding.
The film itself is not so perfect however. Some of the exposition (especially in the first third) is all to brief and rushed, leading to actions that don't feel entirely justified or rational, both in Theron's character and her partner Selby - who is excellently underplayed by a wide-eyed Christina Ricci. The editing and/or writing also felt a little off, again most notable near the beginning, with scenes not gelling together as well as they should have.
But it's…

Charlize Theron is brilliant but if you know the facts, then this film glosses over them a little too much for my liking.

I really loved this one. I already worshiped Charlize Theron going in and this made me feel even more justified in my almost creepy admiration.

Sad and haunting film, great performance by Theron. Solid movie, but in the end it just seemed to miss it mark and just fell short of being great.

A dark and disturbing film about a women driven to the very brink. Theron turns in the performance of her career (at least, so far) transforming herself into Aileen Wuornos in front of our eyes. Roger Ebert called it "one of the greatest performances in the history of the cinema" which it most certainly is.
The film also features a hauntingly beautiful score from electronic artist BT that perfectly captures the dark and haunting nature of the film.
Not an easy watch by any means, and a film that will leave you asking questions.
Be sure to check out the two Nick Broomfield documentaries about Wuornos for better insight into her life and mental state.

I must say; when I first read that Monster was about a lesbian serial killer, I was less than excited, but I was way wrong. Charlize Theron's performance is being called one of the greatest of all time, and it's hard to argue against it. She did an unbelievable job. Truly. She acted in every scene to the point that the audience will start to lose track of the fact that they are watching a movie. She deserved her academy award.

Best female performance of the decade

I feel odd saying it because this movie is so violent and at times utterly hard to stomach, but this is one of my favorite movies. For a first-time writer and director, Patty Jenkins works magic. Charlize Theron delivers one of the most powerful performances in movie history, not unnoticed by the late great Roger Ebert, who also fought for this movie. There is not a single moment where this film feels phoned in, and Theron's performance is an exercise in commitment. In every scene, she's at 150%. Like Theron's unlikely casting, BT providing the score seems like such a stretch, yet his music provides just the right tone to carry along these intense scenes. In many ways, this film is a wonder and a true achievement in filmmaking for all involved.
