Bong Joon-ho is fast becoming one of my favorite directors. Every film of his that I have seen has been amazing. And this is my favorite so far. There is something special about him. He has a way of shooting his films that makes it seem as if he is doing it the only way one could imagine it being done. It feels perfect.
Kim Hye-ja delivers something that I would not dare call a performance. It is so breathtaking to watch her. She is unbelievably phenomenal. One of the best performances of the 21st century. Yes. I was with her all the way, captivated, utterly immersed. Watch it for her alone.
Thing is though, she's not alone. And the…

#7 in my 'Foreign Films Season' and a recommendation from Ozols.
Another South Korean movie I have thoroughly enjoyed! A thrilling story with brilliant direction matched by great acting.
I was mainly interested in seeing this after seeing Bin Won in The Man from Nowhere and being thoroughly impressed. He was just as brilliant in this but it's not his performance that shines throughout this movie. Hye-ja Kim as mother is absolutely incredible. Loving, caring, coddling and believing her son no matter what drives her to insanity. Her own life revolving completely around him - a point being made of women whose own existence are overcome by those of their children.
Joon-ho Bong is spot on with the direction. Every…

A compelling family drama that beautifully transforms into a clever, sinister and unsettling mystery film, that tastefully touches on the inadequacy of the authorities (a reoccurring theme I've seen in Korean films). I wasn't expecting a film of this caliber going in, and I'm beginning to believe that Bong Joon-ho is a genius. That's twice Bong Joon-ho has made a film that I believe all movies should strive to live up to. I watched this film without the company of Tetramoose, but he has seen the film before and didn't enjoy it to its fullest, due to wildly inaccurate expectations. I decided to watch this because he specifically stated he'd probably enjoy it more if he watched it a second…

Even as far as Korean movies go I have to admit I was stunned by how strange and unsettling yet also slightly comedic Joon-ho Bong's Mother turned out to be. First of all an interesting bit of trivia I got off the IMDb page:
"Because of phonetic differences between English and Korean, both "Mother" and "Murder" are spelled the same when translated to Korean characters. The movie title, "Madeo", is a play on this similarity, suggesting both "Mother" and "Murder"."
Knowing this actually makes the movie feel even more enigmatic than it already is. There are scenes in Mother that are dark and deeply unsettling juxtaposed with the funny antics of the accused son that create an atmosphere of the…

Plays in a very interesting way with the thriller genre, replacing the lead with a fragile woman, and also making her quite weird, she is relatable as a mother and you want her to succeed, and at the same time she has a grotesque relation with her son and has done some very questionable things in the past. The tone of the movie is odd, it's not trying to feel completely real, when things start to get really heavy it breaks the tension by pushing the viewer out of the movie with weird surreal moments.

This was a great example of the lengths some mother's go to protect their child. I didn't expect it to be funny at times and turned out to be a great movie overall with some pretty good acting. Messed up story but worth watching if you like these movies.

A feeble-minded man who lives with his mother is accused of the murder of a young woman. His mother certain that her son is innocent goes on a quest to clear her son's name. Good film about the sacrifices parents make for their children.
