In the excellent documentary film Not Quite Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino compares this Aussie chiller from 1982 (I don't know why Letterboxd has it as 84 - US release?) with Kubrick's classic, The Shining. Watching it for myself it's easy to see why. Both concern themselves with a large old house used for residents (a hotel in The Shining, an old folk's home here) with a seemingly haunting and terrorising malevolent presence that tests the sanity of the film's protagonist. Like The Shining, the atmosphere this film evokes is similarly stifling and ultimately lingers in the memory.
Simply put, Next Of Kin is an intelligent and atmospheric horror film with excellent and inventive cinematography and direction from Tony Williams. Visually striking,…

Slow-motion lyricism, unnerving calm and anxious looking lay the groundwork for one of the most satisfyingly eruptive conclusions I've seen in awhile. This should be seen and celebrated way more widely.

also a great soundtrack & a song called 'love you like a pie'

For me, one of the biggest pleasures of watching movies is to stumble almost accidentally into a hidden gem. Specially a horror gem. Why in the world isn't this Australian creepfest a huge (cult) classic around the world? (Although to be fair, it does top almost every 'ozplotation' list you'll find in the web.) Beautifully atmospheric, scary and truly imaginative; filled with twisted humor and some of the most haunting images I've seen all year. Tony Williams, its director, went MIA after the film, which is a shame.
Next of Kin is a new genre favorite for me, and I can't wait to watch again and again.

A fantastic Australian horror thriller set in a old folks home. It starts off slow and atmospheric, but the body count starts building and the action ramps up exponentially for the final twenty minutes. Ultimately, it's too over the top, full of some wild coincidences and cliches, but the action, direction and smart acting makes it tense and creepy.

Great 80s Australian horror, that builds slowly, pulling you in, then goes mentally awesome in the last few minutes. Totally brilliant finalè that took me completely by surprise. Technically a slasher, but not really, it's tense and mysterious. Well worth checking out.

When it comes to aussie slashers, these films are few and far between. This however is a very underated, creepy little gem that has yet to be released on dvd? Tarantino quoted this as being very similar to The Shining in the documentary, Not Quite Hollywood. I agree with him on certain aspects but this is alot lower budget. One of the most Stylish movies i have seen from the era, If your a fan of 80's slashers you will LOVE this!
