Synopsis
The ambiguous suicide of a local beauty, weathergirl, cheese model, and Marilyn Monroe look-a-like finds an eager sleuth in David Rousseau, best-selling crime novelist. If you build on the life, myths and legends of Marylin Monroe, add a sense of Coen's Fargo, Lynch' Twin Peaks and Preminger's Laura, and you're beginning to get a sense of what Poupoupidou is all about.
Sadly, therein lies the rub as well. Poupoupidou lacks its own voice. It seems to build too strongly on Gérald Hustache-Mathieu's (writer and director) admiration of these and American culture in general. And I say sadly, because there's a heck of a movie underneath it all. As it is it just falls between chairs, and desperately cries for its own identity.
It's still a movie well worth a look. There's a lot of greatness--or maybe specifically great ideas--behind the project. The camerawork is…

Most of the reviews I've read on this are quite uniform in their praise, that this is a stylish and somewhat unorthodox thriller. I can agree with that. But the buck stops there, overall it is rather shallow and unsatisfying.
The characters are clearly in need of some charisma, and since one of the two leads has been murdered (or not), the chemistry between them is also in dramatic need of more life. But it delivers on the part that it has an unlikely protagonist who suddenly finds himself in the middle of a bizarre snowy village, where the local celebrity, now dead, was a Marilyn Monroe lookalike famous for her cheese commercials. How's that for a setup.
Most of the characters behave rather weird, and it's a thriller that never is particularly exciting. And that is its biggest problem.

A nice little mystery that promises more than it ultimately delivers. The first act is littered with surreal details and slightly-off characters. The influence from Twin Peaks is strong and a couple of scenes start out with a Badalamenti note. As the story unfolds this influence wears off, for good and bad.
The tone is very light, but with a nicely sad undercurrent. The balance between the two isn't handled perfectly and the sad parts get muddled with a dark humor. The snowy smalltown setting helps though. It's perfect for the somewhat goofy but claustrophobic mood.
A large part of the overall appreciation of a mystery comes from the actual unravelling of the mystery. It's done in large parts through…

Really not into the down-on-his-luck but somehow all-knowing altruistic male lead cliche, nor the sexy troubled actress in distress role, but this film wasn't completely terrible.

French comedy/mystery with Sophie Quinton as a cheese model/weather girl/Marilyn Monroe wanna-be who's mysterious death captures the attention of a pulp novelist. Smart, breezy and a bit quirky with a good soundtrack.
