A failed attempt by Robert Altman to take on (or take the piss out of) the 80's teen comedy.
The thing is, there's actually some interesting things going on in O.C. and Stiggs. Altman clearly has something to say about American conservatism and the bourgeoisie, and injecting a comedy with this commentary is a bold move. The problem is that the commentary is pretty heavy handed with the evil Schwab family being overtly racist or overtly stupid or overtly hypocritical.
The bigger problem is that O.C. and Stiggs are detestable characters. I'm not sure how conscious of a move that was because it seems like they are suppose to be closer to a pair of Ferris Buellers: smart-assed connivers who…

Altman does a wacky 80s comedy in full on Altman style. The film ends up being a completely chaotic mess with a plot that is barely there but the film's hi-jinks being filtered through Altman's prominent style makes this misfire a fascinating and interesting watch for Altman fans.

This movie is such a mess. It's ridiculous. I love it!

Comedies, unlike other genres, do not have a default entertainment level. A horror movie can drop from chilling to camp and still be enjoyable. Not a comedy. It works or it doesn't. This one does not. A meandering grating experience which seems to span eternity in its nearly two horror running time. The passing cool shot or character moment that works makes it all the more cruel. Hopes are raised ever so slightly just to let us down again. The film exudes a tone which can only be described as headache inducing. It could bring a hangover to a tee totaller. (Is that even a phrase anymore?) The disappointment in the whole experience is near to religious in scope. Recommended as a reminder to what the 80s were really like!

Robert Altman's hilarious, cruelly satiric jab at the horrifyingly contagious epidemic that is bland middle class suburbia may look like a typically vulgar and offensive 80s teen comedy - which, by all rights, it is - but it's also one of the smartest, strangest, most anarchistic, and endlessly quotable of all the 80s teen comedies.
Armed with fireworks, a gift-wrapped uzi and driving their monstrosity of a car which proudly bears the flag of Gabon (the African nation they genuinely love and regularly call), the titular teenaged duo O.C. and Stiggs spend an entire summer fighting against their mortal enemies, the Shwabs, the capitalism-loving white bread surbanite family who clearly need to be stopped before they reap more damage on…
