Oliver & Company
1988 Directed by George Scribner
Synopsis
The first Disney movie with attitude.
This animated take on Oliver Twist re-imagines Oliver as an adorable orphaned kitten who struggles to survive in New York City and falls in with a band of canine criminals led by an evil human. First, Oliver meets Dodger, a carefree mutt with street savoir faire. But when Oliver meets wealthy Jenny on one of the gang's thieving missions, his life changes forever.

Oliver & Company is an urban 80's take on Oliver Twist, about Oliver, an orphaned kitty that meets a gang of tough, street wise dogs who befriend him and help him adjust in the city.
There's very little originality to this one, but I felt that the grimy, dark art style actually worked great for an urban "hip hop" 80's New York. There's nothing too pretty or fancy about it, and there really shouldn't be either.
I also quite liked the musical numbers, they felt more like actual "music videos" than very heavy handed stuff that's been written forcibly for the film.
And Billy Joel's voice as Dodger sounds a whole lot like Henry Winkler to my ears, so much that…

Not bad, just not all that memorable, either. Never seen so much actual product placement in an animated movie before.
Another situation where I would give this an extra quarter of a star instead of a half if I had the option.
No reason to not recommend, but don't go out of your way to make sure you see Oliver & Company. Weak recommend. -
I got this on VHS in the year 2000, I loved it then and watched it a dozen times, I still enjoy it now, One of the lesser rated Disney movies but great fun!

Divertida.

Lifeless and cheap-looking Disney Dickens adaptation that's more akin to Don Bluth productions, even if the characters have the potential to be memorable and quirky. The music's just awful and the narrative thrust limp.

Debuting right before "The Little Mermaid" in the pre-Renaissance era of Disney features was Oliver & Company.Oliver & Company doesn't really have the pizazz that the movies from that era have, but it did have a lot of the same heart. The plot is nothing groundbreaking, but the animation is pretty good. With that said the plot may be the weak point.
It's an okay effort from Disney.I would put it on par with "The Rescuers". -
For the life of me I can’t explain why this film just doesn’t work. It has lively characters, a fun soundtrack, and a solid premise: retelling Dickens’ classic Oliver Twist with an all-animal cast in 20th-century New York City. Somehow, though, the elements fail to gel, and cheap, lifeless animation and an excess of sentimentality don’t help, either.

I was pleasantly surprised by this.
It wasn't a masterpiece, but I was expecting a mediocre cookie-cutter kiddie-cartoon, and I got a cookie-cutter kiddie-cartoon that was something above average.
The soundtrack especially deserves praise.
That being said, Tito should never have become the third most important character of the film, and all characters are extremely flat. Hell, Georgette seems to do a face-heel turn for no reason whatsoever.
But whatever. Worth it for Georgette's solo number.
