I'm a big George Carlin fan, but until now I'd only seen most of his older stuff and the earliest thing I saw from him was when he hosted the very first episode of Saturday Night Live, which was an excellent stint by the way. I decided to watch his very first special and compared to his later works, he's a lot more mellow and calm and laid back than in later years. It looks like it took a few more years before he became the bitter angry George we all know and love. Carlin's first HBO special, and one that is, strangely, littered with sound issues from the start that they didn't bother to edit out of the DVD or TV showing. Huh?
It's a pretty gentle affair, as much of Carlin's earlier stuff tended to be. He seemed to get angrier with each heart attack! As such, the rants about airlines (always one of his best subjects) and supermarkets don't carry the weight they would in later performances as he doesn't really put the angry energy into them that we would become accustomed to.
He's not helped terribly by a slightly unenthusiastic audience and the fact that the show is probably about 15 or 20 minutes too long. Not one of his proudest moments, this, but still very funny at times, as you would expect.

George Carlin's first HBO special with a (now) very odd disclaimer for his Words You Can't Say portion of the show
