Through its use of archival clips and contemporary interviews, One Day in September plays out as a thrilling documentary. Not a single one of the athletes or coaches should have been taken hostage in the first place. Review

Distasteful moments here and there (particularly the infamous montage at the end), but this is still a fascinating documentary about an event that haunts my mind.

"Arguably the best documentary of the 1990s, certainly one of the best of all time. It tells the story of the infamous day in which 11 Israeli athletes became victims of terrorism during the 1972 Olympics. To make matters worse, it happened in Germany just as they tried to improve their international reputation (after all, they had hosted the Nazi Olympics, right?!).
What makes the film extraordinary is the feeling that we are all watching a thriller as the big…

Now given that on the day I was watching this a major demonstration in support of Palestine happened in London that does give one a different perspective on things, however even without that and current events going on, I would still have noticed that this doesn't give much perspective to why the hostage crisis happened at all.

This is a much worse film than I remember it being, and it's issues are myriad. Famously, the movie won an Oscar due to an incredibly under-handed campaign which involved letting as few people as possible see it - you can see why.
The event itself is fascinating but the movie feels uncertain on how best to cover it, relying on apeing Errol Morris' post-Thin Blue Line stylistic ticks and deploying an assortment of smoke and mirrors. Often folk mistake…

Staggering ineptitude among the authorities.
