One of Our Aircraft Is Missing
1942 Directed by Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger
Synopsis
1942s first blast of screen dynamite
During the Allied Bombing offensive of World War II the public was often informed that "A raid took place last night over ..., One (or often more) of Our Aircraft Is Missing". Behind these sombre words hid tales of death, destruction and derring-do. This is the story of one such bomber crew who were shot down and the brave Dutch patriots who helped them home.

"There's always a canal in Holland."
Rather pathetically, I'd only ever seen one Powell & Pressburger collaboration, but if it makes things any better, it WAS A Matter Of Life And Death. I made a decision before Christmas that I was going to go through and watch all the of The Archers films chronologically and fix that.
Just for argument's sake, as I know there is some debate about whether some films should be included under the banner of 'The Archers' I'm sticking with the co-directorial credits only. It all started, on that front, with this WW2 tale of the crew of a British bomber seeking the help of the Dutch underground…

British Men Sit In Fight Jets While Bickering Back And Forth Battling Nazis
The problem for propaganda films is this: for some people it makes them feel proud and patriotic, and for some other people it just feels awkward. One of Our Aircraft is Missing is not only awkward for the audiences, but it is even more so for the filmmakers. One of Our Aircraft is Missing is so blind to anything but the magnificence of Great Britain's flag. Although I rather like Great Britain and I obviously do not like Nazis, One of Our Aircraft is Missing still managed to come to a giant mess, even though I was naturally routing for who they wanted me to.

A fascinating yet engrossing suspense-war film about a British bomber crew who land in Nazi-occupied Netherlands as they get help from the Dutch resistance to evade the Nazi in one of Powell/Pressburger's early triumphs.

"A crew of English airmen have to bail out over Holland and try to make their way back to England. This wartime film very obviously had a great propaganda value, but surprisingly the bravest people are the Dutch nationals who risk their lives to help the airmen, whilst the Germans are not portrayed as unsympathetically as I had expected. The film is very unusual in having no musical soundtrack, and has a very young Peter Ustinov (who I missed because I never read cast lists before watching films)."

Grand propaganda war film.

A typical war movie that was made during World War Two. A British airplane crashes in Holland. Its crew has to get back home with the help of the Dutch underground.
