First line ''The legend of Orpheus is well known'', well looks like i'm already out of my element. I try to steer clear of confusing words like that. Set sail towards the land of confusion. The story is briefly mentioned and recapped in the beginning of the film from an unseen narrator for those of us who skipped history classes back in the day. In a way, I think it was probably for the best that I remained unaware of the tale, so that I could ride through its beauty unknowingly as if it were created in front of me. A nightmarish mystery turned captivating tale of love. Difficult to predict in all the right ways and impeccably crafted. I…

In the evening I watched Cocteau's The Return of Orpheus (on television).
Where have all the great ones gone?
Where are Rossellini, Gocteau, Renoir, Vigo ? The great — who are poor in spirit? Where has poetry gone? Money, money, money and fear. . . Fellini is afraid, Antonioni is afraid . . . The only one who is afraid of nothing is Bresson. -

I didn’t find this remotely interesting. In fact, it was very tedious.

Jean Cocteau's Orpheus is a dreamlike marvel of a film, turning a classic tale into marvellous cinema, beautifully directed and shot. Its only real flaw for me lies in its acting, with Jean Marais giving a somewhat bothersome performance as the rigid title character who often comes across as more of an uptight asshole than a sympathetic hero. Still, the film is an entrancing, superb work that makes me admire Cocteau and his skill even more.

Orpheus didn't seem like a largely detestable character until this viewing. Thank you for opening my eyes to a world of shoddy acting, Mr Cocteau.

A wonderful meditation on the meaning of love. The characters may be too difficult and unlikable for some but the movie is a real beaut for those who can get past that. I'm not sure I've seen any other Jean Cocteau films before, but I'm looking forward to the next one.

I enjoyed Blood of a Poet so much I decided to watch this on shortly after. And I wasn’t disappointed. I found a lot of humor in this one, which was surprising. But I suppose falling in love with Death herself is a funny predicament to find yourself in, especially if you are accustomed to loving only yourself. A fun, dark deviation from the original myth.

Is there a film out there more French than this? It’s pretty much quintessential: 90 minutes of the bourgeois arguing stridently about poetry, in a dream.

A surprisingly bland retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice. I expect more from Jean Cocteau.

I've got to be honest, I couldn't wait for it to end!!! Just not my cup of tea a film that is obviously not for everyone!
