You know sometimes in movies when there is a short movie-within-a-movie parody of a romantic comedy or talky drama? "People Like Us" plays like an entire feature-length version of one of those parodies. The film, about a man who loses his father and gains a heretofore unknown sister and nephew, is built on a series of unbelievable situations and motivations, lies, and subterfuge. The characters are frustrating, and, had the film actually jerked any tears, it could be decried as broadly manipulative.
As terrible as this all sounds, the film is not a disaster if looked at in a certain light. For some reason, and aside from the ridiculousness of its situations, the film is watchable. The amber-bathed, sun-dappled cinematography…

*WARNING* This movie contains the most misplaced and disgusting fart joke in cinema history. *WARNING*

As the directorial debut by Alex Kurtzman, People Like Us tells a moving and somewhat engaging story. It won’t break your heart, but it might make you shed a tear.
Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks make decent leads in this family drama, both giving very heart-felt performances. Banks’ character, at first, comes across as quite unbelievable as it’s a role that we’re not used to from her, but her character is well-developed so it works much better as the film comes to an end. Pine doesn’t give a break-out performance either, but it’s always nice to see him in a lead role, though his character did need more of an emotional impact. It was Michelle Pfeiffer who stood out for…

This is passable enough, you see excatly where its heading in every direction but it does entertain. Chris pine is watchable and does have some spark, also when doing anything with Elizabeth Banks.

People Like Us is an amazing film. It's heartbreaking but in a happy way. And have some Kleenex for the ending. Yeesh.

This dramedy starring Chris Pine in the lead role and Elizabeth Banks as Pine's long lost sister features a wonderfully well-woven story about a family brought together by the death of their father, played by Jon Favreau. Also in this film is Michelle Pfeiffer as Pine's mother, playing a role that grabs you in a performance that I haven't seen from Michelle in years. Altogether the film has odd pacing but leaves you with a heartwarming feeling in your chest that won't let you forget it.

Burn this movie with fire. Good intentions & decent performances can not overcome this 2 hr cliche fest.

Good tearjerker about absents fathers and lost family. Chris Pine is so good lookin' and I liked Michelle Phiffer as betrayed wife. Ending though, while supposed to be heart warming and touching was actually creepy. Father is kinda stalking his 8 year old daughter. Ugg.

I wish Chris Pine was in better movies.

Story of a man who discovers he has a sister, and how it changes his life. The chemistry between Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks is fun to watch, and while the kid is annoying, I think he's supposed to be. Michelle Pfieffer and Olivia Wilde round out the cast, both giving thoughtful performances.
I liked this, but I didn't love it.

¨My last image of my dad are taillights while he drove away to his other family.¨
People Like Us is a wonderful drama that will have you smiling in one scene and crying in the next. It´s a very emotional film with strong performances and an excellent script. This is one of my favorite films of the year. Many critics have said it has too much melodrama and feels like a soap opera, but I disagree completely. I found it to be very authentic and true to life; yes maybe a little too calculated, but it worked because it had a strong message. I loved the ending of the film as well; I left this movie completely satisfied and wanting…
