Part of Dastardly Difficult December: film nr.63
Once again that ugly rift between enjoying a film on its own merits and judging it on the source material it's based on rears its ugly head. As a film it is very well made, but Suskind's novel it is based on is not really done justice as it misses too much of the story to get to the true essence of it.
Das Parfum is a stunning novel. It is a surreal exploration of the mind of a disturbed madman, set against a luscious backdrop. It is part tense and gruesome thriller, part philosophical expose on the psyche of man and the nature of good and evil. A tough read, but a…

Week 3 of the Adapted April Challenge.
My mind is buzzing with ideas and theories. The film is a mess, but a glorious mess. It is so unfocused that you can pin it to dozens of different messages and still come out right. You can think it is about good and evil, about true love, about misfortune or you can even call it a commentary on money. It is a truly unique film.
Tom Tykwer is a director I'm falling in love with. Up until mid-last year I had never seen any of his films, now I've seen this, Cloud Atlas and Run Lola Run and after those I'm fairly sure the man is a misunderstood genius. He lacks the…

Sniff up: Jean-Baptiste is one of the most deliciously fiendish protagonists ever created in this brilliantly imaginitive story. An 18th century psycho killer cum super villian, nicely cinematographed & scored. A funk monster is created from J-B's extraordinary sense of smell combined with his social inadequacy. More evil than James Brown and smellier than Patrick Bateman's aftershave cabinet. He is both driven & crippled by his hooter.
As a supervillian he has no sickly sweet nemesis to stop him running amok. Sniffing girls pantyhoes left right & centre, unchecked. Dipping his fingers in shit pies and inhaling the vapours like a decades long smoker wheezing on an electronic cigarette, addicted, trying to inhale that hit.
Dustin Hoffman's finger wagging Italian perfumer is enjoyable and there is the occasional macabre giggle.
For such a long film it never gets dull; must be good!
Take a whiff on that, jack.

Yesterday I had the privilege to see this movie in a small theatre accompanied by an "Scent DJ". So whenever there was a (key) scene in the movie that concerned a certain smell (and in this movie almost all the key scenes regard scents) the audience would also experience this. And that's simply awesome and totally works with this film! It really adds something to this film and it was an outstanding experience.

Part of The December Project
This was a rather bizarre film. For the first half it trundles along as an engaging and a times disturbing thriller. Whishaw gives an interesting, endearing yet frightening performance and the supporting cast all do well enough. Then in the last 45 minutes it suddenly shifts gear and moves from disturbing to surreal.
I have to admit that it lost me at that point. I don't feel qualified to say whether it ended well or badly because frankly I didn't understand what the hell was going on.
It's a shame because it is an accomplished piece of film making. Brilliantly shot, beautifully scored and as I've said, featured a great lead.
I can't recommend this because it felt a little too over-the-top in the final act, but equally I wouldn't suggest avoiding it as it was certainly involving.

Well done, but did not live up to the book.

I have more to say but I want to get something up now as I am over two days as it is on posting this.
For now I will say I liked a lot of this on technical levels but rarely did I enjoy watching this movie.

This is a very unique movie. I read the book a long time ago and when I found out there was a movie I couldn't wait to see it. I was surely interested in seeing how the ending would be handled.... I enjoyed how the movie was narrated as it draws you in and the suspense builds. But the movie is not really a 'thriller' as 'the story of a murderer' would imply but merely the story of one mans life...a story of the senses... Watch it if you dare! LOL

Props to the late great Roger Ebert for bringing to my attention the excellent audiobook edition of Patrick Suskind's Perfume: The Story of a Murderer years ago.
Tykwer's film version is a worthy adaptation, uncompromising in its R-ratedness and especially memorable for a wild ending.
